Powder Valley’s Take on the Primer Shortage

Stuff we all kind of knew already but I like the part about “estimated 6.2 million new gun owners”.
Yeah, just wonder how many of those new gun owners will turn out to be friend or foe.

I hope SOMEBODY picks up the recipe for the Rem 7.5 flame throwers...

Ive got like 20k, but damn...

Makes me scratch my head and wonder. How the hell they could supply for an actual shooting war if they cant keep up with mall ninja's scared of antifa?
Maybe Lake City has a strategic reserve set aside for mil?

I'd like to know the real story behind the complete absense of foreign primers?? I haven't heard of any panic buying in Russia.

We are the peons in the grand scheme...

Lake City(and whoever else has .gov and .mil contracts) gets their pick first and then we get the leftovers... so to speak..

I suspect in a large scale shooting war we'd be tooling up rather quickly and pulling equipment out of mothballs with the increased demand. The supply to civilian shooters would be choked off very quickly.

I think we have a combined effort between new gun owners (prospective reloaders), preppers (they buy shit to buy shit and buy a lot of it), scalpers (people who buy to sell on GB at peak prices), B&M shops (pull inventory to sell on GB at peak prices).

Also I mean no offense to anyone in the forum who may identify with these groups. Just no real way to speak my OPINION in a more civilized PC way.

***edit to add .gov end of fiscal year contract replenishments.

The military has been behind in meeting its ammo demand numbers since 9-11.

Part of the post Cold War Peace Dividend was divestment of excess military ammunition production capacity. Since 1989, government production plants dropped from 28 to 13. Commercial producers went from 163 to 69. The Army's dozens of WWII small arms ammo plants is consolidated into the single Lake City Army Ammunition Plant.

In 2004 the Army determined it needed 1.5 billion rounds per year -- three times the annual production rate of three years earlier. We didn't run out because we were burning up war stock.

By 2008 the Army was buying ammo from England, Canada, Brazil, Korea, Taiwan, and Israel.

Today's legacy -- you can pick up 5.56 made by Federal (FC); Winchester (WCC in Illinois and Winchester Military Ammo, WMA, in Mississippi); Israel Military Industries (IMI and TZZ); Korea (PMC and PMD); Taiwan Army Ammunition Plant (TAA and Wolf Gold); CBC; and a bunch of other interesting and different places (Prvi - PU; Lithuanian GGG; Canadian IVI, among others).

S&B is brazilian.

Wolf is "technically" a US based company although I believe almost all of their ammo is produced by Tula in Russia. Although I have heard a bunch of the Wolf 22lr is Lapua/SK 2nd's. I dont think "Wolf" makes anything, just an importer brand name.

Unex? I dont see that company listed anywhere...

Unis Ginex. Decent primer. Graf carried them. Bourbon and autocorrect, go figure.

good call on S&B. I have thought they were chec for years. Looked it up and I’ll be damned. No reason for them not to be flowing in.

Plenty of Mexican Aguila available. Their center fire is complete crap. I only use it to function check gassers. If it'll run Aguila it'll run anything.

ive recently shot some 124gr Aguilar 9mm. Weird looking shit with a crimp half way down the case but shoots well enough out of a G19. As well as the CCi Blazer. Maybe I have lower standard? I’d buy it if I could find it.

Aguila quality can run the gambit of match grade to complete crap. Just depends on who's running the machines that week, and how fast they're running them...

Industrias Technos' (parent company) main customers are Central and South American military contracts. I'd wager what the US market gets, is contract over runs, and whatever left over production time is left to pad the profit margins with ammo made as quickly as possible. Hence the wide variance in quality. Military ammo is held to a pretty tight tolerance. Commercial stuff can be...well, if it goes bang, they'll sell it unless their contract holds them to a certain QC level.

It's been quite a few years since I worked with Aguila/Centurion/Industrias Technos, so things may have changed...but not likely.

This is one method of how you replenish your guns and ammo...

Looks like Bosnia, at least the parent company is based in Bosnia.

yup, but IMO (may be BS) anything old Eastern Block has old Russian influence still pulling the strings and as we have sanctioned the shit out of Russia and a bunch of its Rich old kings, I think this has stopped the flow of ammo/primers from that part of the world. I don’t see state run stuff like ammo manufacturing just rolling over to private, independent companies. Maybe I’m wrong but to me it makes sense.

If sanctions aren’t at least partially responsible, what are some other reasons for the shortage over the last 4-5 years? The slow disappearing of comm block primers started under Obama. My first encounter was when the Tula and Wolf SRMs stopped coming in around 2014.

It's very interesting, that I have found good supplies of primers on websites of stores, in Canada, New Zealand and elsewhere. Of course, it can't be shipped to the USA. It caused me to wonder if the shortage of primers in the USA, is intentional. Are Americans are the only ones buying, or hording munitions?

This really has me rethinking any load development I do. Can’t afford to dump 100 primers into a day of load development anymore. Now I’ll be using local friendly match days as development days. Where I’m not so worried about my agg scores and I’ll shoot 3 different loads for my 3 strings of fire.
The guys I feel bad for are the 3 gun shooters and competition pistol shooters. Those guys burn through a lot of ammo in practice and in matches. It’s a bad time to take up pistol/steel shooting.

Because of this alone I've unfortunately paused all load development for rifles. All I shoot now is established loads, and everything inside of 100 yards I shoot with my Anschutz just because I have a lot of match .22. Its gonna be a shitty year for shooting I think

Same here. Even though I still have a lot of rimfire ammo, I shoot my air rifles a lot.

The last .22LR shortage caused me to get back into airguns.

Makes me wonder Gunny, all reloading supplies out of stock or picked over.

Monday through Friday, old timers who are retired stand outside of every gun shop in town an hour before they open, and wait. Shop opens. They descend on the place like a swarm of geriatric locusts and buy everything. They go home, place it on the mountains of ammo/reloading supplies they have no intent on using. The rest of us who have to work all week swing by said shops on the way home from work, or on the weekends when we have a free minute. Everything is gone. All of it. Not a single God damned round or reloading component left, except some goofy, odd shaped "self defense" pistol ammo nobody has ever heard of, at $87 for a 20 round box, and a dusty, returned bag of twice-fired, berdan primed 303 British from Pakistan.

Fast forward a year. SCOTUS fucks us all and Biden/Harris end up in the White House. It's absolute pandemonium across the country. Patriots, aka Washington's Slayers, have been in the streets going full 1776 against ANTIFA and BLM, aka commie faggots. The good guys are running low on everything. They are quickly realizing that their few thousand round stashes from the good old days when the God Emperor Trump ruled the land, don't last very long when you're peeling back Maoist muffin caps like hotcakes. Nobody has been able to get anything gun related ever since the chongers sneezed their bioweapon all over the planet. Its worse than the worst gun and ammo shortage of the Obama years. The aforementioned old timers end up passing away peacefully in their sleep. They picked a great time to check out, God rest their souls.

Their kids get their affairs in order and start digging through all their shit. All of them have matching "Feel the Bern" tattoos, a penchant for Kombucha from Whole Foods, and they all smoke American Spirits. They find the stockpile of ammo and reloading components. They gasp. "How could Grandpa have stockpiled all this evil stuff? We have to get rid of it," one says. "I always knew Grandpa was evil," the other says. The libfuck kids have waste management bring in a dumpster for clean up. They throw all of it in there: hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammo. Hundreds of thousands of CCI BR2s, CCI 200s, Federal 215Ms, magnum, small rifle, pistol primers, you name it. Hundreds of pounds of H1000, H4350, Varget, Retumbo, RE15, IMR4064...All of it...gone. They pile on a bunch of hardwood, hand built furniture, from the turn of the 19th century, on top of all of it. "Cover it up with this shitty furniture. Aint that the truth. How in the fuck am I going to be able to go to stores and buy components when I work 5 days a week. I managed to pull a late morning going into work one day and used it to wait for my local sportsman’s to open, I showed up as they opened but it was a day that they received jack shit. Cool, my one day I used had zero success.

yeah the Obama admin blocked the imports of all foreign gun parts the way I understand it.
reloading components fell under the ban.
2010ish is when this happened.

I am wishful thinking, but hoping someone puts the bug in Trump's ear if this election works out to sunset this regulation.

I wouldn’t hold my breath. He’s using sanctions as effectively as they could be used. I suspect we’ll have to look elsewhere.

I also suspect business are scared. Between local COVID policy and any upcoming B/H regulations that may be decreed, it’a likely going to be a tough road unless you’re selling weed...

It sucks, but if you weren't laying in deep after the last shortage several years ago, there is no one to blame but yourself. Components were never as available and cheap as they were this time a year ago. My goal has always been to have enough that if the tap was turned off tomorrow, I would never run out.

The tap isn't off, but its not far...and I am pretty close.

I wasn’t even in the country this time last year. Also, I am not a hoarder, at least I used to not be. Now I know, buy everything even if I’ll never use it, or so I can at least sell it at 3x markup. Check!

I just never understood people who hoard ammo, don’t you people ever shoot??? That’s why I never have huge supplies of it, because I actually shoot it.

Thats funny....now do you understand hoarding? Its not hard to buy extra, and still shoot plenty...and because I have done that for the least several years, I get to keep shooting.

And yeah, I have made some money at three and four times what I paid, and with that I have bought more components.

I actually shoot a lot.
I’ve easily burned 10-12 pound of powder so far this year just in rifles.
I’m far from a hoarder because I’ll easily shoot my current supply of powder and primers in the next two years or so.

To stay stocked these days requires you to plan years in the future, not months.
It’s been that way since Obama came into office.

Not really, but power to you for being retired and having no responsibilities to have the time and money to do things like that.

LOL...I am a LONG way from retired, and definitely not flush with money. I work full time, and have a kid in college, and one at home, and I've never stood in line for a single component...I simply look for deals and buy when its cheap. Because of that, I get to shoot whenever I want, as much as I want...which is quite a bit.

You can blame whomever you want for you not having components, but in the end its only up to one person to take care of you.

It’s on me for not buying more small rifle primers before I got into my last box.
Luckily I have some large rifle primers for two barrels worth of creed so that’s where I’m going now.

Turns out their kids are all liberal shitbirds with purple hair and enough hardware in their faces to set off a metal detector at the airport before they've even left the parking garage. "He always talked about killing japs and said they deserved a lot more than Fat Man and Little Boy. He even told me once that we should have listened to General MacArthur, whatever that means. He always said America is the greatest nation ever to grace the planet, and the Constitution is the greatest document ever written, second only to the Bible. Grandpa was everything my Genderstudies Professor warned me about!"

Clearly Grandpa wasn't a fan of fair trade either, or he would have bought all his furniture from Ikea," they say. "Now no evil Trump voter white supremecist can ever get their dirty racist hands on any of this stuff." They call waste management to pick up the dumpster. It gets hauled off to the landfill, never to be seen again. The commie scum drives off into the sunset in their Toyota Prius, powered by strawberry douche.

Anyways, I'm going to get another cup of coffee. I fully expect to be banned for this post, by the time I get back to my computer. Its been real, boys.
Well I sure feel better now. Think I'll go nail my nuts to the shop door, just to ease the pain a bit.;) It does make me thankful my daughter is pro 2A, pro Trump, and drives a truck which will crush a Prius.

How does a business like Powder Valley stay in business when they have nothing to sell?

Probably because they sold it all. Powder and bullets keep showing up if you're looking - it may not be exactly what you want but it's not like the flow has been cut off.

Nothing like a little satire to make light of a situation that’s no fun 🙃

Most companies don't stock tons of stuff because normally they can get it JIT. Powder Valley doesn't seem to be getting much in so I'd think that they aren't selling anything either. No sales = no money for rent, personnel, debt, etc.

Read this earlier today. Yea, nothing crazy new. Higher demand due to panic buyers and more shooters. I'm glad I got into reloading a few years ago. Plus I only reload for my bolt actions so I don't exactly fly through supplies.

I wont comment on their inventory system - as I don't know. If I were to guess, I'd say there business did very well in the last couple quarters. I don't think JIT vs traditional inventory will be the issue going forward if supply remains restricted to mostly ammo manufacturing - and you'd see that across the reloading component resellers.

My point was more - powder and bullets remain relatively available. It's primers that feel like vaporware. And there was another thread about ammo shortages in another forum. It's possible it looks worse because we're constantly talking about it.

We shoot more!
