Same in my state. The signature match is done on the front end, and once the ballot is accepted as having a valid signature from a properly registered voter ... that phase is over.

In AZ a signature is required.
It must be verified against the signature you used when you registered to vote. If there is an issue they can call you from your number on file, number get updated when you request a mail in ballot.
A missing signature, not matching signature is supposed to result in a phone call to move forward.

It's supposed to be compared to the signature of record. If the two don't match then you disqualify that particular ballot. This is why there's an issue with showing up in signing for registration and your voting ballot signature is an issue.
It depends upon the state, but it's usually not grounds for immediate disqualification. In my state, the law says that the election clerk must attempt to contact the voter within 48 hours, and then there is an opportunity to fix (or "cure") the ballot if it can be done prior to the close of polls on election day.

I'm guessing that the military was called into play because a crime had been committed and these servers were part of that crime. I don't know the mechanics of how this went down, but I'm hoping the good guys now have the servers as evidence to the crime. At least this is my hope and prayer.
