Bighorn Origin Build Thread

My wife's origin built for NMLRA long range inline matches

.40 cal muzzleloader
K&P barrel finished at 26 inches by Bestill Creations
Krg stock
Burris XTR

Launching 275 bullets at 2450 using Blackhorn powder. No smokeless aloud at Friendship. 13.5 min to 500 yrdsView attachment 7443813
Care to enlighten on this? What was needed to turn it into a muzzleloader?

Yeah, need to do a thread on them. This is second one, mines in .45 launching 325s. Using an arrowhead rifles breach plug that uses large magnum rifle primers. The modules are same bolt face as .308, so works in centerfire actions.

Snap modules under extractor to load and nice thing about Origin action is they fall out the magwell when you work the bolt. I just catch em and put em in a tray beside where I shoot.

Oh yeah and mines a 6 Creed chambered by Bugholes in about 4 minutes. Heres a half assed pic of mine at a match making smoke

I got some time behind my new Origin today, and noticed that it’s very stiff when closing the bolt; it takes a fair to good bit of force to close it/open it. Noticeable on an empty rifle, even more so chambering/ejecting.

I’m running a TT; is this the “cock on close” I have read about? If so, does it need to go back to Zermatt to be timed?

No. They have u measure firing pin protrusion when cocked and uncocked and send a new cocking ramp

There's no need to send TT triggers in for timing. They've been the most consistent trigger we've seen come through in many different ways and they all time up within about .005" with a .015" under sized cocking piece in the Origin. ALL of our Origin actions are using those cocking pieces and have been for some time now.

It's very different on TL3 or SR3 actions, so if you go that route, we'd still perform that service for you. It's just not worth the time or money in shipping to send your TriggerTech triggers for Origin actions.

Thanks - Ray
Ray,

My new action is having some COC issues with a TT. What do I need to do?

Why the M24 contour? I’m trying to figure out what contour I want for my 6 BR, thinking medium Palma or marksman as of now.
If you’re going to use your rifle for PRS go as heavy of a contour as you can fit. I have a proof comp contour in 6 creed and a bartlein heavy varmint in 6 bra. I run my origin action in a KRG bravo chassis.

Who chambered up your ai for ya? Looking at building the same thing
AC Douglas Gunsmithing out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. If you are in Canada I can highly recommend him. Freebore was perfect, quality of work was great. He made me up a Modified case for free without asking. Also, he had it shipped back to me in less than three weeks, right before hunting season. Last gunsmith I used locally in Alberta, told me 5 weeks and ended up taking 8 months. Well worth the $30 shipping to use Craige at AC Douglas Gunsmithing.

224 Valkyrie Origin, I am getting some decent groups with cheap federal Eagle 75gr ammo (still easy to find for $12 a box lately).

Anybody running a SL with their Origin? Any issues? Am I correct to order a rail specifically for use with the SL? Any other info you can pass on before I put a deposit down would be helpful. Thanks.

yeah you'll need a different rail that doesn't extend past the front.

call Clayton. he'll give you all the info you need on the switchlug

but i'd still recommend just torquing the barrels on normally unless you have a very specific application in mind

Has anybody ordered an Origin action lately. I'm on week 16 (through John at Keystone Accuracy) and still not received. Just wondering if anyone else is having the experience. Thanks!

Got my origin over the summer after ordering a complete build from black collar arms. 10” 450 bushmaster pistol

compounding issues there most likely. lead time from Zermatt AND lead time from Keystone

I ordered one from bugholes.com on 12/5. My FFL texted last night he had received it, so that took all of 4 days. I would highly recommend buying from one of their venders who actually has one in stock like bugholes.com, Altus, Keystone, PVA, etc. Apparently much faster, they are the same price no matter where you buy them.

Dang......I just looked and they are out of stock everywhere. I can’t find one in stock anywhere, I was going to post a link. I must have gotten the last one at bugholes. My guess is it won’t be much longer before they are all in stock again. Two weeks ago bugholes had 6 according to their website, you have to bird in hand those things when you see them in stock.

What color is your barreled action? Looks great

Just OD Green. I'm not sure which specific one, I just told him to try to match it with the Tommy Bahama stock as best as he could.
I'll ask him which OD Green he used when I go to pick it up.

Origin Long Action
Mark Chanlynn barrel 338-06
B&C Medalist stock
Jewell trigger
Leupold VX6HD 3-18x44

This one has been an adventure. The combination was not a good fit with the 20MOA rail on the Origin. Shot 13" high at 100 yards and no adjustment available in the scope. Folks at Zermatt/Big Horn Arms were amazing as usual. Ray sent me a new 20MOA rail but behavior was the same.

Fix was two Talley front Scopemounts with 8-40 screws, replacing the rail. Unfortunately. not enough tube length on the VX6HD scope to mount in the Talley's and get the proper eye relief. Went with a Leupold 2.5-10x45 LPS scope as a short term, perhaps permanent solution for this hunting rifle.

Post your Bighorn Origin builds here.

Mine is another masterpiece by Jon Beanland.

Bighorn Origin
#3 Bartlein 5R chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor finished at 24”
McMillan Adjustable Game Scout in Desert Carbon Ambush
Triggertech Diamond
APA Bottom Metal
Bighorn 20 MOA rail
SWFA rings
Bushnell 3-12 LRTSi
Flush cups on left side.

Load development was easy. Wind was unusually calm so I decided to do it at 500. Not picky at all. Biggest group of the day was the 130gr Berger AR Hybrids at .632 MOA. Best was 42gr H4350 behind the Berger 140gr Elite Hunter. That went .498 MOA. Five 5-shot groups with 5 different loads averaged .555 MOA at 500 yards. Taking this one for Caribou in a couple of weeks.

I picked the best charge from my 500 yard load development and put 5 rounds on paper at 100 today to make sure I had a good zero. Wind was gusting hard and bench was really wobbly or it would have been better. Made a .1 adjustment and reset the zero indicator. Battery ran out on my chronograph so I made a guess on velocity and took it to 820 to use the velocity truing function on Ballistic AE. Group was 4.5” low at 820 so I put that in Ballistic AE and it determined true velocity was 2790. Fired one more group at 820 using 2790 velocity and it was centered on aiming point. I think we’re ready for Caribou.

Great looking rifle, I love the pattern! What about your cheek weld? Looks like you would need a pad/riser?

Quite possibly, those are low rings also. I usually use Talley Lightweights but decided to use the rail that came with it. Kind of wish I went the Talley route now. Oh well, we'll see how it feels.

So what's the consensus.... "should" the 6.5 PRC be built on the LA or SA with a DBM? Any downside to doing a LA? Will mags need to be modified for proper feeding from mags?

Short action if you're going to go long action you might as well utilize a long action cartridge. Both the SAUM/GAP 4S and PRC are fine in their intended role in short actions. Will feed fine from accurate or alpha wsm mags, even will feed well from an ARC 10rder.

Will thanks for the response. I have 2- 6.5 SAUMs, both built on SA but I have no experience on the PRC yet (in a DBM configuration at least). I am flirting with running out of room in mags with the 6.5 SAUM with 156 Bergers on both SAs, thus questioning if the LA is needed if intending to load long heavies in the PRC.

The only advantage is see in a LA is being able to load past SA mag length and using the action for a true LA mag caliber at a later date. If the 6.5prc cannot feed reliably from a LA, I would much rather deal with a shorter COAL in the SA.

No problem i wouldn't think so though. Considering the OAL is roughly equal to the SAUM it's really a question of what OAL you want to run and magazine limitations. Can you run 156s right now? If your barrel is throated for them and it's below 2.970 you should be good to go in DBM. I run the 1.535" 180gr ELD-M in a 7 Sherman Short that feeds from DBM at 2.970.

Had Gunware build my dream hunting rifle recently. Bare rifle was just shy of 7lbs, total weight was right at 10lbs.

Dredging the thread to the top....

Hey fellas, anyone running the Origin SA in BDL format?

If so, how well does it feed?

Got a bunch of spare parts laying around and can cobble one together albeit in BDL SA.

Thanks!
