Dream: Shooting out your back porch/window/walk out basement?

I was watching a YouTube channel, I think it was called the Military Arms Channel. What he was shooting isn't important, where he was shooting I thought was just a dream setup. It looked like he had a shooting bench inside a walkout basement, at least that's my best guess. It appeared he had a bench up against a window and was able to shoot from his air-conditioned and heated room, year round.

I can only imagine how much it would speed up my load development if I was able to do that. It would be absolutely incredible to have my equipment on one side of a walk out basement and be able to just push off and roll my wheelie chair to the other side of the room and shoot out the window at a 100 meter target. It would be an absolute fantasy to be able to just go back and forth like that, no matter what time of year, no matter how cold, no matter how hot, rain or snow. No driving 17 miles, packing up gear for every possible scenario, no cease fires, no range officers, no worrying who's shooting next to you or waiting in line.

I'm retired now and have tried to get my wife to move into an area where I could duplicate exactly the above but no luck. she insists on civilization. As a confirmed curmudgeon I see no advantage to civilization.

Is anyone here so blessed with something like I've described?

The place I was renting I could go layout on the side porch of the house and get a 350 yd shot in pretty easily. Longer if I changed my position to the yard. Sadly the landlord died and his kids got greedy and wanted to sell all of that beautiful land into chopped up parcels to try and make millions. It was fun to play on while I had the use of it.

I live near by the law enforcement range now and since I'm a reserve deputy I can use it anytime I want so still kinda lucky, but it's limited 100 yards.

Only cleared 50 yards for a .22.

Wow...some of us just don't know how lucky they are. As they say, there are some that got it and some that don't.

It’s not always as good as it sounds, I can shoot out to 650m 25m from my reloading shed, however farming to be able to live here keeps me so busy I rarely get to use it 🤦‍♂️, especially not when the hay is coming off 😴

Love it! That’s what it’s all about, bit of the same here too 👍the kids shoot more than me at the moment

I'm curious, how is your Internet connection in an area like rural Tennessee where you can shoot out those distances on your property? I looked at some property in middle Tennessee, Clarksville area I think, and I could get a wonderful place for a great price but the Internet connection was via carrier pigeon every where I looked. As a retired computer engineer, this would be most problematic.
My life consists of firearms, motorcycles and computers in varying amounts at various times, shared with as much and as many grandchildren as I can possibly con into coming over. I'm not above using cajolery, flattery or bribes. Yeah, I know, not everything in life makes sense.

Internet sucks even with Hughes Net. We can only get 3G currently with our phones and awaiting Starlink to arrive which is new so we’ll know more mid to end of summer.

This used to be my view. Had a 750 yard range off the porch and could have setup from inside, but it never crossed my mind

I am lucky I have 120 acres so can shoot a LONG distance from my shed year round. Rifle or bow, lots of deer 50 ft away. Ocassional black bear, some grouse, Coyotes, Weasles, Skunks, Racoons, Rabbits, Squirrels etc etc. Got a garden and a small pond. Very remote, all forested so internet and cell coverage sucks at best, usually have to drive several miles for reception. Three TV channels is all. Still a little cool in winter even with the wood stove in the shed and hot/humid with bugs in summer. Have to drive 20 miles to a very small town for anything. Can only keep a woman around for a weekend or so, they don't seem to care for the remote, quiet cabin life fulltime. That's ok, I worked 45 years to be able to retire and do this, that's what matters.

I have about 200 yds if i wanna strech it. I grew up thinking that anyone could shoot whenever they wanted, then we moved into town and tried to be all civilized. the range is where my heart is, home is just where i store my guns and ammo. I would go crazy if i couldnt just walk out in my front yard and have some fun whenever i want.

My plan for retirement is to head to a state where I can have at least 100 yards and be able to shoot from under a deck cover of my home. I’m far from retirement, but as the title says... dream.

This was 75 yards on the back deck. Started clearing a shooting lane so I could get 200. Then we moved, now I need to clear another lane. But should be able to get 450 or so off the back patio.

When the crops are out I can do 1200 roughly out of my garage with permission from my neighbor. But haven’t gotten to that yet.

I'm actively, for real now, looking for an area where I can shoot at least a 100 meters, preferably 250, AND get a usable Internet connection and by usable I mean being able to get Netflix, Amazon Prime streaming, etc. I'm willing to pay to run fiber a rational distance, even an irrational distance. Does such a place exist in the USA? I searched hard in a state I'd love to move to, Tennessee and found nothing. Tennessee has so much going for it, Incredible scenery, bearable tax environment, balanced and not hateful government. Civilization if you're close enough, great entertainment and amusement.

As a retired computer engineer I can tell you that Satellite links such as Hughsnet ain't it. The latency is is incredible and nothing can be done to alleviate it as you can't repeal the laws of physics. That Satellite is some 20,000 plus miles away in an equatorial orbit and no amount of technology is going to change that short of Star-Trek Sub-Space.

Let me know if you live in such a place. Maybe you need a neighbor that can you can share reloading recipes with and fix your motorcycles and computers/network?

We have Rise broadband, no issues streaming movies. It does more than I or my family will use.

Abitnutz, I lived all along the western side of the state for 40 yrs, moved to Tn. got 36 acres and can shoot out to 150 yds from the garage and have fiber to the house. LUCKY I GUESS

how long can you run cable or fiber before you get meaningful signal loss?

def envious of the indoor & outdoor setups above!

Multi-mode fiber can do Gig up go up to a 1000 meters with no issues. That's 3280 feet or almost 3/4ths of a mile....It'll go 2 kilometers at a 100 Mbit. If it's single-mode, and most outdoor cable is, it can do freakin' gig at 10 kilometers.

I have 11 acres that border 1200 acres of vacant land in the mountains of north central Idaho. End of the road on the backside of a mountain. The nearest neighbor is 20 acres away. The reloading room is upstairs with a balcony or I can step onto my porch and shoot through my chrony out to 150 yards. Very handy for load development. I can make minor adjustments and go from the press to the chrony in minutes. The whitetails and turkeys don't care about gunshots so I have to make sure they are not around the targets before I touch off.

We shoot off both the front or back porches, having target berms at 20 yards and 35 yards respectfully......primarily for handguns and 22 RF’s. If we decided “not” to walk the 35 yards to the bench which is adjacent to the berm.....we could shoot out to 335 yards from the back porch!

We have BLM land behind our property, and a state land section to the front! memtb

It’s the American dream brutha! My wife and I just purchased some property. Currently in the process of getting everything setup, but I have the same dream for it. Hoping to do it out the pole barn though instead of the house.

My yard glitters in the sun, i collect most of my brass, but the ground just bleeds up more every time it rains and .22 just stays where it falls. Its beautiful to me, maybe trashy to some, but i care zero about what anyone thinks.

I'm thinking a bardominium style building, about 2000 sq., ft. Just big enough for me, my wife and all of our crap after we've condensed it. That is likely way too large but it's a guess. Dedicated gun/reloading room, integral garage/workshop for my motorcycles, smaller area for my computers. The wife owns the rest.
I just need a piece of property that I can shoot a decent distance on and that has a good to great Internet connection. Those two things seem to be mutually exclusive. I would preferer gun friendly, tax friendly state. Well, tax friendlier state. Forget Alaska...sorry, getting my wife agreeing to move to somewhere like Tennessee was victory enough.

Sounds like you need a seperate office in town for internet. If i had to choose one or the other, i choose shooting freedom. Yes, internet sucks in the country, but you cant shoot in town. Any time you make a compromise, like with a car going to racecar, you will have give and take. You dont get more horsepower without giving up fuel milage and comfort.

View attachment 7593114This is out the back door. Shelter and bench is a few steps away but sometimes just shoot off the patio. Have steel on the level out to 1100. I feel very fortunate.

Sweet! 👍 I can go to around 850 yards flat, around 2500 yards to top of ridge.....but, have to make a river crossing to set-up and check targets! 🤣 memtb

I hear the practicality of what you're saying but I want to have it all and what I want in reality ain't much. This is about the dream, right? And the dream isn't like winning the lottery. This shouldn't be the impossible dream. This is what we should be able to have as Americans, a damned nicely paved road and safe bridges to where we live, no matter where we live and a broadband connection along with it. We're talking about a freakin' piece of plastic tube with a light running through it. We're not talking about rocket surgery here.

My friend ace is like you. He bought a beautiful house in the country. Thats actually how we met. He lived there for a year and then he had a mansion built in Austin. He still comes and visits to shoot, but he prefers the nice internet and all the stuff thats in the city. Just make sure before you go all in on your dream, that it doesnt become a nightmare.

Fuck no. Not everybody should have what the very few of us have shed blood sweat and tears for. You have to work and earn this, and it shouldnt be for everybody. I like that the internet sucks here, keeps city folks in the city where they belong.
I should have added....if he can afford to PAY FOT IT. I damn sure didn't get what I have for free and I'm pretty sure you didn't either, so I'm not about to give it away to someone else. However, I pay a BUTTLOAD of money to the government every year to have roads, bridges and communication like broadband....so people like me and you can live where were can afford to buy. If someone wants to pay for a bus line out there, so be it but they better string a fiber connection to my house before it goes to the trailer park. Maybe I spoke too much.
