My wife and I are looking to head back south to warmer climate, I have been retired for awhile (I'm old and disabled) but she has 18 months to go. We are very conservative people living in a very blue state and can't handle it any longer. I'm originally from the south FL. but moved north 45 years ago when the state became over run with people, the wife is a true Northerner.

We own property in Ocala Fl, but the wife is not fond of Fl, (to many northerners from NY and NJ), would like to find something else.

She wants to be close to shopping, restaurants, etc., and live in gated community for safety, as for me, a 500 yard range close by (30 min.) or so is preferred.

We have been looking in SC and NC and would love some feed back from anyone who lives in these areas. We would consider other places as well if the climate is good and not another blue state.

Look forward to the responses so we can start our research...........Thanks for real input........

My parents have been in upstate SC for closing in on 25 years they love the Blue Ridge area. If not for the winters they'd stay year around, but it's dang cold at least to them so they do winters in FL.

Central Texas - New Braunfels/Canyon Lake area might work for you. Not exactly cheap for gated communities around here, but if you sold all your properties you could afford to live in one. There is a private 500m range that I'm a member of that welcomes new members occasionally.

Forget NC it has turned blue in the last several years, just re-elected dumas ass dem governor. Wife was born and raised here and we are looking at moving to eastern TN and Upstate SC (Northwest of Columbia)

It’s a weird state for sure. Not blue but purple. How cooper got re-elected is a mystery.

My experience in red to purple states is that HOAs and gated communities are going to be a lot bluer than elsewhere. They attract people who feel the need to make rules about the way other people can live.

Southern NC ain't bad, but to be close to a metro area and a great range ( which I'm a member of) is just a little stretch. We are, however, currently afflicted also with a fraudulently elected governor. The senators seem to be keeping him in check, for the moment.

In the past 20 years, I have lived in Montreal, Chicago, Oklahoma City, Greensboro, NC, Detroit and the Houston area. Texas is by far my favorite place.

TN just got my vote....not that it didn't already have it

Tennessee's permitless carry bill passes in House, will head to governor's desk

I left wnc a long time ago. Too many yankees and flordia yankees moving in. Spent a little time in the releigh area for work. That might as well been nj as far as people go. Currently in ga and looking for the exit sign. I suppose I'll go f up al next.

Lived in Fl (native), Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Kentucky.

If you want hot, there are still places in Florida that haven't been destroyed by outsiders. Portions of Western NC are tolerable depending on where you are. If I had my druthers, I'd probably go back to sweet home alabama.

Or some place in west texas where the population density is about 10 per sq mile. :)

TN, MO, KY and AR are not only conservative, but the least likely to be infected by libturds.

I cant imagine leaving my home to get away from other people..... but sadly i can imagine them eventually tying me to a horse backwards with a hood on my head. Seems like alot of indecisive people think they can just move away from this and itll be all better... still, if ya can take the heat Texas is paradice.

Its not a mystery at all. I'll break that down for you.

Cooper was tough on covid. A lot of the people that voted for trump here b/c they like him are elderly but are also the same ones that are more affected by covid, so they thought cooper was doing a good job, also, they are generally retired and the shutdowns didnt hurt them financially like it did the younger demographic (younger than elderly). Also, Dan Forrest didnt even run a fucking campaign. I never saw any commercials for him at all on tv where i saw countless cooper commercials. They polled NC and found that only 18% of North Carolinians knew who tf Dan Forrest was. You can never win an election by running a campaign like that. People DID know who our Lt. Gov was so thats how he got elected. He couldn't be more different than Cooper. So with that said, you can thank Dan Forrest for not having a real campaign, and thank the elderly b/c the think covid is the boogie man.

I'm in upstate SC, transplanted from NH. I miss having four seasons but I don't miss wrestling with a snowblower for two hours every time we got 6 or 18 inches of snow. I don't miss waking up the morning after an election and finding out I'm outnumbered by moonbats.

Property taxes and gasoline prices are much lower than most places. I saw $2.29/gallon yesterday. Sales and income taxes are 7% coming and going. That was a bitter pill to swallow coming from NH rates of 0% and 0%! My property taxes aren't $6,300/yr. though.

CWP takes a class, then 3+ months to process. It's better than MA but I compare it to 10 days to issue and no stupid class like NH was before CC.

There are several places to shoot 1,000 yards in NC but I think SC has one, just north of Columbia. There might also be one down near Charleston.

Winter here is cool but certainly not cold. Occasionally we get a dusting of snow. It's year six and I saw 4" once. It's absolutely hilarious. Everything shuts down. In NH it takes twice as much to have an excuse to be late anywhere. Below I-85 any accumulation is rare. Also south of I-85 it can get hot and muggy during the summer. I was looking in the Greenville SC area. A half hour commute from the NW & SE respectively was a 9 degree difference in average daily temperatures! I don't care for hot and muggy.

    Best of luck!

Spartanburg, Greenville area is bad for ice. Not so much for snow.

Arkansas should be struck from the list. Though they vote “R” here the taxes are far “L”. Second highest sales taxes in the country with the second poorest region in the country. And everyone seems to think voting for more taxes is a good thing. It costs me damn near as much to live here, with the exception of property tax, as it did in Alaska. I damn near shit an egg when they told me I had to pay “Personal Property Taxes” before I could register my vehicles. What the hell is that tax?!?!

Good to know, thanks. I escaped to rural MO 7 years ago and it can't be better

Born and rased in western NC and lived in western NC 34 out of my 40 years.

NC is the Massachusetts of the south. old democrats that don't know why they are democrats keep voting democrat becase there dad did for generations. lol. but the influx of people in RTP and CHL dose not help.

In the western part of the state there are 4 defined seasons. I don't know of a shooting range that long here

I would check out upstate SC I think The Clinton house has a 1k range open to the public.. so south of Greenville or Spartanburg may be a good fit

Hey....If the clock is ticking, just wait then move south when you can leave all the junk you really don't want in MA.

Big Ivy Guns Range in Burnsville NC goes out to 1,000 yards. They are new but I've heard good things. There are a few in central and eastern NC.

Clinton House is the range I referred to above. They actually have a one mile range in addition to their 1,000 yard range but the one mile range isn't always open.

I'd say ditch the gated community, and sell off properties to buy a big enough acreage to set up your own steel and targets.

Never understood the gated community. They're the only places that have regular b&e here. As a criminal, wouldn't you go where the fancy homes are?

I'm from the Deep South, lived / worked all over America, reside in Montana.... My perspective is probably different than many.
For what it's worth... Research the area around Texarkana AR and Texarkana TX twin cities.... Funny thing is I don't hear many people wanting to pull up stakes and move there. Hearing about and witnessing the mass migration of people to Montana.

Yep, NC also has personal property taxes on vehicles. There are a LOT of taxes overall in the state too. I've got about 10 years more, then I'm heading West.

Come hang out in Charleston, the rest of the planet does. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Meanwhile...... WDN and wife start down low packing in the middle of the night for Florida 🤣

So you're one of them too? Damnit! They'll let anyone in here!

It is driving me nuts seeing the millionaires come in and buy a vacation property and shut down all the ranching/farming. Very few continue to operate in any meaningful way. It's like they don't understand the economy and food depend on the ranches being.... ranches?!

FUCK YEAH! best thing i could do was move from the Peoples Republic of New jersey to the great state of TN. The cities however........

Stay away from Louisiana. It is a corrupt, vile, sewer. If not for my pension, I'd be out.

The migration has been going on for a long time... Unless you are Native American... Someone said the same thing when your ancestors arrived.

The big money people had both visions and money long ago:

I thought that was very plainly sarcasm. Guess I was wrong.

42 years in Florida. Got out three years ago best thing we ever did. I do think the panhandle has a bit to offer if wanting to back that far south. We moved to southeast corner of WV and absolutely love it here. The people are so genuine and the landscape is beautiful. Plenty of places to shoot including the massive amount of land we bought for our money. Pigg river is not to far and is a fantastic venue. Just the right amount of all four seasons. With work I’ve been all over the world and feel like we found a hidden gem here.

welcome to Nebraska where we have to put up with the same shit. And your personal property tax on the vehicle doesn't go down much till it's 12-13 years old. Nebraska is one of the worst taxed states in the nation. Born and raised here, love the people for the most part, excluding Lincoln & Omaha which are leaning left more every day, but getting the hell out as soon as my wife retires from UPS, which unfortunately is another 3 years away unless we decide to take a hit on her pension and say the hell with it and get out. She just got her 25 yr plaque and link to a free gift (whoppee) but if she stays till she's 65, the pension is a lot better. Thinking Lake of the Ozarks, MO here we come. Texas is just to fricking hot and not enough fishing holes and OK is meth capitol of the US. MO is tax friendly

If you move to western NC . just make sure you are not in Buncombe County and you should be good to go. may want to stay away from Boone as well.
