Night Vision IRAY Rico MK1

Tomorrow (Monday) night at 6:30 PM CST Sportsman Channel has programmed a show by Night Crew (I think) in which the Iray Rico Alpha is supposed to be showcased. It is the newest model of the Rico that is supposed to be released soon, after the MK1. They also have a model called the Bolt that is designed for bolt action rifles that is soon to be released, pictures I have seen look identical to the Thermion.

Been using this particular scope since last Tuesday night and probably have around 15 hours of use with it...

Detection range... outstanding.

ID range...pretty damn good. ID’d deer out to 930 yards.

Battery... not it’s hyped up to be for sure! Sounds and looks like I have a faulty one.

Factory mount... garbage and the simple ADM mount has a ridiculous price tag on it.

Foucus... very, very tight and finicky. Not a fan.

Form factor and size...very nice! Been using it as a scanner as well and it’s managed to retain zero being on and off the gun.

Menu and button layout... nice and intuitive.

Screen size is great.

Image quality... PUMP THE BRAKES BOYs!

The extended battery life is one of the selling points. How much time are you getting off it? Thanks.

Have not timed it from full to dead, but can say I ran it close to 6 hours in one night and it had just hit the yellow marker which is a 1/4 left...

More concerning is it’s had a few glitches on start up which produced a clouded out screen and 2 instances of failing to come on completely. Both were blamed on the battery being faulty.

Depends on where you put your priorities. Overall...not impressed at all.
Yeah thats what Im afraid of. Its just like a trail series with a little better picture.
I think my money is going towards a ir hunter mkiii 60mm. Im done screwing around with sub par termals.

Which Trail are you referring to?

I asked because you mentioned image quality as a comparison in your original post...
Honestly think you’ll be disappointed if you think it’s going to run with a XP. In some places, yes, some places it was about on par with the XQ I had.

Did a review here:

I went from a Apex XQ50 (my favorite), to Halo LR, to pulsar trail 2 xq50lrf.

The image of the apex I had was really good. It wasnt as good as the halo lr, but for the money it was good. The halo lr housings gave me trouble, and I lost faith. The trail 2 was good, not as good as the apex though. Grainey and image boost sucked too much going on.
Im going trijicon next.

Right on man...

I’m going back to a Halo LR myself. What issues did you have?

Wow, great write up. Lots to think about.

Where about in Texas?

any updates on this? im considering replacing my pts536 with either a rico 384 or xq50lrf

The pulsar units always had poor reputation for zero wandering even with the upgraded mounts.

This was with the original trail models, pretty sure the trail 2 hasn't had this issue at all

Maybe. It seemed hit and miss, and I also read about some Thermion users having similar issues but it’s hard to quantify with such low numbers and people individual setups (mount/ring choices, shooters abilities, etc)
It’s too bad because I’ve always been a big fan of the Pulsar units for non-itar users

Nope...
Someone was supposed to get back to me on what the issues were, but nothing but crickets from the dealer and IRay.

5 day turnaround warranty prob doesn't mean much if they don't call you back...ugh I feel for ya man

Damn I thought the halos were good. What a bunch of piles of junk.

That stuff costs a lot of money if you count your time at all plus shipping crap back and forth

So you have yet to hear from IRAY on this issue?

My money was refunded through the dealer and the scope was sent back within a week. Both said they would let me know what they found to be wrong after they had gone through it.

Ping ping in china salutes you for your patronage comrade, lol j/k!
Nice nice, the 640 one? Post up some video of that bad boy!

Yep 640...this is the day I got it messing around with a fox. This was wifi sent from scope to phone and compressed by youtube
.Have the settings perfected a bit better now.

None, I've taken it off; turned off and on, etc and still repeated shooting moa steel out to 300+ yards and have already put down a couple dogs on the move. I've tested zero at distance probably 5-10 times now.

I watched those videos thoroughly and read all the comments. His unit may ot had issues but honestly it looked like bad shooting to me

You even watched the part where there was a clear delay on what's recorded vs what's being shown to the shooter? It looked like the display he was seeing was at least a second or so delayed vs what was actually happening... hard to hit moving targets with that handicap. Also, remember that the unit recorder was closer to real time than what he was seeing, and the recorded video is what he had to share. So what he saw when he pulled the trigger vs what the camera has to show you WOULD look like bad shooting... that's the whole point.

Did you read the comments on both videos? Iray goes over this in them.

I have had 0 issues so far with any of his claimed problems. I couldn't be happier with this unit

I hadn't read the comments! I'll check them out later - curious what the mfg had to say about it.

Dude was trying to apply a slight speed bug that occurs in the recorded file played back AFTER the fact to be something that you'd experience in realtime. That wasn't the case. Seemed almost like an issue of it recording at 30fps but playing back at 29.97 or another common frame rate for video files. Folks get more views on YT by saying there's a problem than by reaching out to the smart folks that actually made the device for an answer...

Just so everyone has the most recent info - There is no bug that will effect your display while shooting in any way. There is no 1 second lag per 1 minute of recording while looking through the scope. But, there IS in fact a bug that causes recorded videos to be played back 1 .6% faster than real-time when recording on the scope. The test in this video assumed that the iphone video through the display was slower than real time, but in fact the recorded video is FASTER than real time. Although this bug is only on recorded and played back videos, it is still a bug and we will address accordingly. For now, unless the videos playing back at 101.6% speed is an urgent issue for the user we are recommending just using your scope as normal. Using the record function will not cause you to miss. All it will do is record videos and play them back at 101.6% speed.

This is a comment from the first video from a random guy, I’m not good with the science behind thermal tho

“Well, if the focus is lost because of low temp. this could mean that the lens in either not athermal or poorly designed objective parts. Point of Aiming shift is troubling.”
