I haven’t had a 30-06 in some time and I have been longing for an ‘03 or a M1. By buddy, who is also my builder, brought this one back from being sportster-ized. Barrel is Critereon and the stock is Minnelli, but for me it’s perfect. Currently wearing a 15x Lyman Super Target Sport but once I work a load up I’ll buy the malcomn/hilux with upgraded mounts to shoot vintage. Next up is a Turner Saddlery sling.

Last three coats of Lindseed oil and two layers of Johnson’s paste wax went in today. Plan is to shoot 168 Hornadays over Varget or H4350.

Sweet!

Its not the "30-06 Club" though....you can just say "Mens Department".

What is the serial number on your rifle, partial if you are concerned...you should run an SRS check over the CMP forum and see if you can get a history hit on your receiver.

Thats a late receiver they ended production in the 1.5 range.

I think everything built above 1.3 came from receivers athat were in inventory than completed into rifles. They can have a variance of parts.

As mentioned if you go to the CMP site, post your Sn, someone will check the SRS books and see if it has ever been mentioned in dispatches.

Hits are rare but the person that replies usually tells you whats around it so you can dream.

Awesome rifle!! Definitely one that is on my list of rifles to get...
On a side note, look up Ron Brown slings instead of getting a Turner. Outstanding quality, custom options, and fast service. I own a few Ron Brown slings and would never consider buying another Turner.

I ran a Les Tam when I shot XTC. I’ve had that sling 20 years now and it’s still a good sling, though it could use a good cleaning and re-oiling. Only issue I ever had with is is the hook on the buttstock portion won’t fit through the ear sling eyelet but I shot an uncuffed sling setup and it never bothered me.

I’ll check them out. Thanks.

Ron Brown met Les Tam on a beach in Hawaii and apprenticed with him on how to make a sling.

I got that story direct from Les Tam when I called to try and order a sling and he spoke to me for about an hour very graciously and Cordially about slings and shooting.

He was concerned a wait for his sling would be too long and he was selling me towards Ron Brown.

I now only by Ron Brown also.

Gunny Turner is a great manufacturer, if I wanted a "issue" style sling Id get one of his. He is a student of M1907 history and I believe he bought the Rock Island sling machines.

Ron Brown builds "bigger" than mil spec.

I've had both Tam and Brown slings. Both are superb. Buy from Ron with confidence.

Looks nice, I like that stock. Sounds like a good plan re scope and upgraded mounts. Fwiw, I used my M1903 w/ Leatherwood 8x scope this Saturday at a vintage match (300/600 yards). I wouldn't mind the improved rear mount on mine, but it was out of stock last time I checked the HiLux website.. BTW, slings are not used for vintage sniper matches, so its just for aesthetics, and always gets removed for a match. Anyhow, good luck with your 1903.

I hope I’m not hijacking here, but, this is my .22 ‘03. It is a low numbered springfield that was used as a parade rifle for years. They never cleaned the barrel and after years of blanks it was ruined. So my buddy and I got with a machinist friend amd he made a chamber insert like the old numrich kits. We fit it with a barrel liner and put new life in a great old gun.

We do a couple “Wood and Steel” matches locally. Not Vintage per say, but there is usually a good showing if ‘03s, Garands and some mixed Euro stuff like k31s. Shoot at 600y w/Sling and coat. “Proper” scope or irons. They have had some similar matches at Oak Ridge as well.

We have a traveling plaque for the W&S portion when it’s shot during the Dean Herron Memorial match that MSM runs. That’s when most show up. (Dean won the Farr Cup in ‘70 with a 100-18v, was on the Army Reserve team, designed the AEDC range and was a no-shit rocket scientist. One of the best I ever knew on and off the range. Up until a couple year before he left the range he was still competing out of a sling with a 40x in 30-338 and a 2” Unertl. He’s missed)

They do the actual vintage matches at the CMP in Alabama. I may try my hand but this rifle is basically just to try to put the spank on the guy who build it. Shit talking 18B (ret) and a very good friend. I aim to crush him but he’ll likely whip my ass as his TBI and neck fusions have him pretty much immune to the recoil.

I love the old finger grooved stocks.

Finally got out with the new rifle. Ron Brown sling is stiff as fuck. I had to get out of the rifle to move the hooks. Did a quick bore sigh at 200 and a few shots at a 6” gong.

Lyman scope threw me for a loop. Elevation is Service rifle direction and windage is standard match. After shooting a 2x1000 with an NXS topped Dasher this shits with mixed “turrets” cost about 5 rounds of ammo basic zero and cost me at least 10 points at 600. I just could not pull my head out of my ass and turn the knobs the right way. I went full SR or Full match for corrections which cost me big BUT the rifle held X ring elevation as long as I was pointed towards center.

First time out this year, first time in a SR sling in 18 years and first time shooting an -03 in 30-06. Managed a 180-5x. For those that know, this sucks. I’m a MR and LR high master so I am expected to shoot 198+. However, I was pretty happy all things considered. I’m going to have to find a way to get some form of chin weld to get behind this scope consistently. It is WAY up there.

You went retro! Nice sticks! You shooting at AEDC? I had every intention of getting out and around to do some sling shooting 2 years ago but my dad passed and me and the brothers had to deal with the estate. I have a very nice pre-64 model 70 that needs some attention.

That’s the Deadzero range. AEDC is still essentially on COVID lockdown. That HUGE facility can’t have more than 10 people on the KD range, to include the pits. 25 acre range, 10 people...
