Some conditions are changing.... I am adapting.

Need to catch the spent brass on an AR... Nothing bulky or that can hang up on a barbed wire fence.

Suggestions ?

3 bucc brass catchers work good. They catch and hold the brass .
TacStar is another but only catches...works good shooting from bench. 3 bucc for in the field.

I agree, I have one. Get the operator, not the range model. The operator folds flat when not in use and flips 180 degrees out of the way. Mounts with a ADM QD so quick on/off and won’t break. Also, the bag is light weight canvas, so hot brass won’t melt it and it has a zipper on the bottom to dump the brass and an anti-bounce back deflector inside to keep brass from going back in the chamber causing a jam.

Full disclosure, I make these. https://bit.ly/3esyzey

I didn't know you were on SH. I use the Rusty Nuts hog hunting on a 6.8SPC. Small, light weight, easy on/off, easy to store in my 6.8 bag. I also have a tactical brass but personally don't use it in the field. I found the TB to be large and bulky, personal opinion. I'm not trying to catch 2-3 mag dumps. Several friends bought RN after using mine at the range.

I did run a piece of small stiff wire through the seam so I can "mould" the opening of the bag.

I have no affiliation with Rusty Nuts and paid full boat for the product.

Hell, I'd be happy with a deflector to keep it in a reasonable area. Brass Goat might be that thing.

i have tried a couple net style catchers and i heavily prefer the brass goat now.

At the risk of derailing the OP's specific inquiry for an AR type brass catcher, anyone know of a free standing deflection shield for bolt guns to keep the brass from flying into the next lane when staying in position and running the bolt with authority?

Something small just to keep the brass from flying across. Something to set up on the ground when prone or on a bench

The ones that I have seen are huge and look mostly to be for catching pistol brass.

And yes, I think perhaps in an hour in Lowes I will find stuff to just make something myself....but I'm lazy LOL

Cheers

The Caldwell bonnet looking net brass trap is what I use for bench or prone. Although the pricing now is making it less attractive, at sub $30 it was a no brainer.

The brass goat has a removable brass holding magazine, if you take it out the brass lands right below you

Ah yeah, I saw that.....the dimensions I found are 19" H x 17" W x 16.5" D but from the pics, it looks huge.

Your view of its size, please?

I just got a goat let you know how it worked out Tuesday probably.

I have a Caldwell but needs adjustment between scoped uppers.

It's large but not ridiculous. Can be put on a tripod or a simple setup of some scrap 1x6 wood, a 1/4x20 bolt and a $3 harbor freight quickclamp to position it wherever you want on a bench.

I often use one of these, it is compact to transport and not that large when setup. The key is to get it in the right location to catch all of my "precious" brass.

If your AR is scoped... a older baseball cap, with an adjustable back, slung across the top adjustment turret will help snag the fired brass.

That said... it will turn the inside of the baseball cap filthy. This photo really doesn't show how filthy... but...

Thanks....and I do love some inventive engineering....but I'm looking for some sort of free standing catcher or even just a barrier of some sort for my bolt gun to keep the brass from flying to the next lane during a clinic I will be taking (and yes, we will all be laying on the ground next to each other like dead tunas LOL)

hahaha...and yes, that cap def needs an oil change! LOL

Thanks again

One of the great things about the TBR brass catcher is the ability to swing the unit out to clear a malfunction.

In the video below I had a full on double feed while hog hunting. I was able to perform immediate action, pivot my TBR over and feel the double feed, and perform remedial action...getting the rifle back up in about 15 seconds in complete dark without having to turn a light on. My hunt was over, but it would have taken a lot longer to diagnose if I wasn't able to swipe my finger through the ejection port.

Skip to the 3 minute mark or so.

The hat trick works, so does a towel, etc. If crafty, get a thick piece of leather, cut it so you can add a snap and attach it to the scope. It works well to keep the brass on the bench or close to your position so you don't have to find it. Just remember if at the bench, you may get an occasional hot roller! In lieu of the snap, you could cut one or two holes to hang from the parallax and/or elevation knob.

Then I picked up this one from ENL manufacturing in Riddle Oregon:

Attaches to the Picatinny rail permanently…

And it’s enough to hold probably 100 pieces of 223 at least…

I saw the note pointing to an info/faq for weapon compatibility, but couldn’t find an faq link anywhere. Does your product work with a long rail Steyr AUG?
No clue, to be honest. If you got one and it didn't you could return it.

I've been having issues getting that page to publish, web design isn't my forte.

While I now own a TBR and use the piss out of it,

When I was a poor, I used a brown washcloth and a couple rubber bands:
Poke holes in adjacent corners of the washcloth and tie a rubber band on each corner

Drape the washcloth over the ejection port with the rubber bands wrapped onto the scope base

Extremely functional, field expedient brass deflector.

So I had to wait before I could test out my new brass goat ar brass catcher.

Arthritis had my hands swollen.

Friday I finaly got out to do ocw on a new load and used the goat.

I shot off bags and it was not in the way, attached firmly with no jiggle or perceptible extra noise.

I ran it with the bottom open to drop brass onto a towle so I can quickly eyeball primers and cases for pressure signs.

It piled them up nicely without chasing after any.

One of my 40 cases had a ding in the neck still perfectly usable and no other dings found at all.

The magazine release is still accessible and it does not interfere with dust cover, trigger or scope mounts.

My only concern was I was a little slow in removing it due to my hand problem if needing to clear weapon and insert chamber flag.

I'm sure anyone with normal hand strength would be fine and it was coming off eiser last time from technique I think.

It's absolutely a keeper.

I have a Brass Goat and it works great on 556 brass.(y)But they don't have one for 308 yet.:(

This is exactly what I've been using on all of my AR's. Instead of using rubber bands, I found using those little bungees at the drug store the Ladies use for their pony tails. They last longer than the rubber bands. Poke a hole in the two top corners and loop through the bungee. I slip the bungees over the front Obj & rear ocular of the scope. It works great. Deflects the brass straight down,

When I originally got the idea decades ago, I used the side cargo pocket cutoff from a pair of old, trashed woodland BDU's.

I now use a heavy, black cotton terry washcloth from Walmart.

Digging this thread up. Saw it mentioned a few times. Anyone else have hands on reviews with the Brass Goat catchers? I'm tired of chasing brass both on the range and hunting. Currently have the velcro and picatinny mounted mesh bags and they suck. Curious if the brass goat is better.

Also is it only for "milspec" lowers or will it fit others like the Aero Enhanced ones?

I have one and it is the best thing I have used.

No hinkey parts to adjust for diffrent scope / optics setups.
On and off in seconds between rifles.

It just snaps in place on the magwell can't imagine a propiatery problem.

When shooting groups on the bench I don't even put the bottom on. I put a towel down to keep things from getting scratched and the brass just piles up in front of you.

Have not used my caldwell since plan on giving it away (pos) in comparison to function.

Just do it, you will not look back.

My reloaded 223 brass is dear to me. It has allready had the pockets swaged / reamed and uniformed and 5hen there is no grit dirt ect.

Thanks yeah I am doing my annual cleaning and processing of range brass and realizing that some of my prepped cases have made it into the mix so I need to keep them separate. I figured the small brass goat would be sweet for coyotes hunting then just pop the container off and let the cases fall under the fun at the range.

Been using one for about a year. Really like it. I mostly don't use the brass catcher, I just use the top half so the brass drops directly below onto the carpeted bench. Works great for me with 5.56, .300 BLK, and 6.5 Grendel. 👍🏼

I just got a brass goat to replace my caldwell Velcro bags. It has worked excellent so far. I have not notice the brass getting dinged or damaged due to the catcher.

Only downside so far is it will not fit my seekins billet lowers due to them having a raised lip around the front of the magwell making them wider than milspec. I also had to do a little trimming to make it work on my Mega lower. Fits perfect on my mil spec lowers though.

I've been using the Brass Goat for about a year now after using the Caldwell type net brass catchers which I was never satisfied with. I works great and never had any problems at all. Only AR it won't work with is my Wison Combat Protector.Elite which doesn't have a Mil Spec lower. Only problem is if your at a range were RO's have to inset the chamber or have to use chamber flag it has to be taken off but that's not a biggy..
