Will 10x be enough for game sized targets at 600 yards and groundhogs at 400 or so? Looking at a nxs 2.5-10 for my proof elevation and I think I’m going to order it

If your not shooting much past 600 the Nightforce 2.5-10x42 is in my opinion the best hunting scope to hit the market. Although very expensive it is almost bombproof. Can be had with or without illumination and with or without zerostop. And a simple IHR retical to the great MOAR reticle. And at only 20.5 ounces it's not overly heavy. I have one now and one will be going on my Gunwerks TI Carbon mountain gun replacing the 5.5-22x50 and saving 3/4 of a pound in the process.
I think they sound like great great all around scopes .... thinking about the most reticle .... I like to use mils but I like the most betttet than the milr

10x will absolutely do it. My hunting rifle has a 3-12x50 PMII sitting on top, and I rarely crank it above 8x.

I think thats a good range the 2-10 for what you’re looking for. A lot of people put too much magnification on… finding targets (like your ground hogs) and tracking them for a shot becomes a lot more difficult when you trade your field of view for magnification

If you're 22yrs old, probably.
If you're 72, probably not.

I'm 59 with good vision so yeah, but I'd still rather have more magnification.

Find them with binoculars, shoot them with the scoped rifle.
Chucks don't require overwatch techniques.
In fact, they are easier to find with good binos and then switch to the rifle for the kill.

I suppose you’re right about the ground hogs. Still gotta do a lot of walking with that reticle if you’re going to be cranked right up there.

Yes, I have a "Nikon Tactical" 2.5X10x that I bought used here on the Hide years ago. Its on a Remington 5R .223. I've shot it to 1000 yards and nailed numerous varmints after the wife's chickens. Nightforce 2.5X10x is a better optic.

I agree with Mike C., as in with prairie dogs (a bit smaller than ground hogs) I am at 18x-20x at 400 yds. I am not Mr. Fantastic eyes, however, but that's what I did with 20/20 corrected vision. Now I have less than that due to cataracts starting to form.

In other words, your personal vision will be your guide on magnification. I swear some god-like shooters here could hit a 12"x12" plate at 1500 yds at 4x.

Scratch that, with irons.

Mike's dead-on here too. I'd go bonkers scanning for PDs with a scope all day. Use rangefinding binos and step a potential step (1. bino --> 2. rangefinder --> 3. riflescope to 1. integrated bino-rangfinder --> 2. riflescope).

How are you liking that setup ? Sounds like a shooter

I shoot out to 1100 with a 3-15 usually keep it on 12.

I want a larger mag range just to have more options, but a 3-15 is a good middle ground I think.

I liked the mag range of my vx5 ... 3-15 was nice

I typically shoot flicker tail ground squirrels which are even smaller than prairie dogs. I used to be a mag whore that needed 20+ to engage them even at 200 yards, but training has brought me back to where 10x is comfortable enough at 300+ yards. More is nicer, but not needed. Granted the target size limits range more than magnification, or else I would probably need more.

So basically the answer is somewhere between 1x and 55x, depending on your eyes, your preference, and your use case. Service rifle guys have no issue being limited to 4.5x max at 600 yards. My next rifle will be a sub-800 yard hunting rifle and will likely be getting a NF 2.5-10x unless a competitor offers something else compact in the sub-20oz range.

All good answers, you have chosen wisely for quality glass. Quality of glass will make or break mag power advantages.

I can get hits out to 600 with my 4x.....with my 15x I can tell where the bullet went if it knocked enough paint off at 744 yards👍

I can recommend the vortex razor lht 3x15.
Its light, and not too expensive either. Although my 4x is a nightforce (older 1x4 nxs) and I will never get rid of that little(heavy) scope .

The nightforce 2.5x10 is a nice piece.
If your budget can go up that new march 1.5x15x42 is real appealing hahaha and I might break for one myself 😆

I prefer the MOA-R To the MIL-R

mil-R is one of the worst reticles available imo
Pineoak is the MOA-R reticle a little thicker then the MIL-R.I love the 2.5x10 compact but find the MIL-R to be a little thin for my eyes.

I already went with the nxs 2.5-10 but that lht was a very close second

I dont know

As the NXS is F2/SFP, it shouldn't matter.

i sold the hunting scope that GA precision had for $800 a few years ago because the lines were too thick at distance

past 500 they were starting to obscure stuff

i had three and loved them except for some stiffness in turning stuff (not going to say it)

and thick reticle lines which were perfect for hunting as they were designed as hunting optics

glass was excellent for $800
