The conditions at Andersonville were horrible. I didn't fully appreciate how bad it was until I was there.

I've been there, to look at it now it is not hard to imagine how horrible that place was. No buildings, very little cover for prisoners, only a single stream thru the prison you drank on the upstream side and crapped on the downstream side. Lousy food and very little of it. The entire area was covered by cannon and if trouble or an escape was brewing they blasted the camp with grape shot.

A thousand people a month died on average. Imagine digging 30 to 50 graves a day. They are buried side by side in rows, no space between the men.

In the lower portion of the picture are guys crapping. Imagine the conditions in Georgia during the summer or a thunderstorm.
