Leaving a rifle on its side

This rifle is finally coming together. Got the scope mounted tonight but the savior soft case I ordered hasn’t made it yet. Only place to keep it out of reach from the kiddos is to put it on a top rack in my closet(I have a gun safe that I haven’t moved to this house yet, just moved recently). Is it going to bother anything to just lay the gun on it’s side for a few days?

as of right now I have the chassis supported to take the weight off the parallax knob. But would it matter if I didn’t and it just laid flat?

thanks and sorry for the newb question. It’s hard not to tap into the wealth of knowledge here.

Hi,

The amount of potential issues to the scope depend on a few things.

1. Mil or Moa?...this is the most important.
2. Does the scope manufacturer have a great warranty program or shill program?...this is pretty important also.
3. Is the barrel marked 6.5CM?...this is the sneaky side destroyer.
4. Does your scope have tape or scope chaps or is it naked?...this one is just for market research and fun, lol.

All joking aside...toss that thing up there and no worries.

If it's barska level scope then just sitting in any orientation may break it....

Only one problem I could think of if it's any decent made equipment...

If it falls from the top of the closet to the bottom and lands on the scope just right
 
I love how we spend so much effort buying " military grade" and "bomb proof" rifles and equipment.......

....yet we are concerned that we are going to break it by letting it lay down on it's side.

Fuck guys, you can take your rifle and yeet it onto gravel and I promise you it'll be fine.

If you know the wind is going to be right to left next day......leave it on its right side the night before.

Only thing you have to know.

In my ealry days here my "Honey Hole". usually a vessel of awesomness actually had a Counter Sniper Scope and the shop owner, usually a library of gun knowlege told me it was awesome.

I came here and asked about Counter Sniper scopes.

My Pm box immediately filled up with messages of pity telling me "Erase it, erase it now!", "Pull it down!" , "Delete that thread or be damned for ever!"

Best question I ever asked. Made me feel loved.

A lot of good responses. I’ve learned quite a bit over the last 3 days. Let’s recap, I’ve learned

1. some 4 letter words I didn’t know

2. the hide hates beginners, anyone without a mentor.

3. the barrel will warp under the weight of the scope, but the scope will not under the weight of the rifle.

4. some members are trying a new rifle storage arrangement, storing them anally based on some of the responses.

5. this forum section is about as technical as the GD of AR15.

I appreciate anyone who gave constructive responses.

You ask a silly question and got a lot of silly comments.

You also by now have figured out nothing bad will happen to your gun.

The guys here like to play soccer and take turns being the ball.
Don't take any of it personal, it's not.

You will know if it becomes personal. Don't blow it by getting upset.

Long term storage in a soft case is something I would think about. No airflow around gun.

Will the argon, nitrogen or whatever gas the scope was purged with run out if it's laying on its side? Hunting scopes with the capped turrets prevent this. Not sure about the tactical scopes.
 
Make sure to tighten caps so there are no leaks.
If a leak is encountered consult a hazmat response team asap.

people used to "alert" me to my golf bag "leaking" all the time.
doesn't everyone fill them with beer and ice? what else is that big section for?
i did rust some shafts and had one snap on contact, which i can only assume if the reason they invented graphite shafts. :ROFLMAO:

Nope...but if left on its side in the sun, the reticle will leak out. haha
 
Make sure you alternate sides. If you leave it on one side to long it’ll warp and cause the rifle to shoot to that side.

Be careful all the scope oil might settle to one side and you could blow out a bearing if you dial too quickly.

NEVER store firearms in a damn case

Almost all the really fucked up finishes I've seen on firearms are do to the damn cases

I'll second that. Use a desiccant bag or thing or 3 near that rifle, whether you stupidly lay it on its side for long periods time over 24 hours or not.
DO NOT store it in a bag or case without such desiccant materiel whether or not you stupidly leave it on one side for more than 24 hours. Such bags or cases should be used with extreme caution to prevent damage to the finish as well as the structural integrity of any firearm. Anything more than a trip to the range or the hunting camp is too long, indeed.
