SMK 175 (308)...can I get it to go faster and longer before going subsonic

Today I tried some Lapua Palma brass for the first time and used 43.8 gr of IMR 4064 (.020 off lands, COAL: 2.856, 24" Krieger barrel) and got 2735 fps . . . more than enough to get to 1000 yds. :giggle: PS: Ran some numbers through my QuickLoad app and it suggests that somethings wrong...

    Identifying Cases Between Firings

I keep my cases together as "lot" in a large plastic freezer zip lock bag. Like I have 200 cases in one bag that have all been fired the same amount of times and don't process them until they are all fired the same amount. And in the zip lock back of cases I keep a paper log what was done for...

It was my least favorite step too, particularly as I had to follow up with separate steps of chamfering and deburring. The Giraud reduce the 3 steps to 1 and the one step was way faster. Now, cleaning my brass is my least favorite step though I dry tumble. 😵

Long range (1000 yard) reloading for 308...168 gr. SMK vs. 175 gr. SMK vs. 185 gr. Berger Juggernaut

Seems I heard from a pretty reliable source, not long ago, that ammo is now using AR-Comp . . .??? Have you by chance heard anything along that line like that?

    Trimmer questions

If one is not turning necks, then I think your theory is valid. But if you're turning necks, the length of that neck is important as the cutter on the neck turning tool comes down to the shoulder/neck junction. While the case length can be very uniform from case to case using a tool like the...

    Trimmer questions

One other you might want to check out is the Henderson Precision Gen II Power Case Trimmer, which is a very well built tool. However, I don't particularly care for it as I like the cutting length based on the head space which is measured off of the shoulder as the Giraud does (and the Trim It...

Actually, there's quite a number of dies for many calibers to be used with it. Scroll down on the link below . . . https://www.blackwidowshooters.com/trim-it

You can't go wrong with the Giraud, whether it's the full bench version or the Tri_Way (which is what I use. . .as it's very fast, saving a lot of time and accurate too). If cost is an issue, a Trim It 2 is worth considering as it works much like the Giraud...

    Mixing Powder Lots.

Before you mix, you might want to run a little test of each to find out if there's any significant difference . . . ??? 🤷‍♂️

    Does +/- .1 grain matter?

Opinions on the Lyman Turbo Sonic case cleaner...

When I wet tumble using my Frankford Arsenal Rotary Tumbler I sure don't have to wait a day or even hours as I lay them out and blow dry them by heating them up with a heat gun. Then when they cool off enough that I can touch them, I can begin with the rest of my process. That's about 15...

    Does +/- .1 grain matter?

I've "dissected" some Premium FGMM 168 & 175 SMK's and Federal's Premium Match Berger 185 Juggernauts that I was running through my .308. With all of them I would get between .5 and .75 MOA @ 100-200 yds. The match SMK caratridges would give me ES's of 52-64 fps and the Federal Berger...

Long range (1000 yard) reloading for 308...168 gr. SMK vs. 175 gr. SMK vs. 185 gr. Berger Juggernaut

I really like MR-2000 for the heavy bullets, but . . . I stopped used it as it's just a little to temp sensitive for me here in AZ where significant triple digit temperatures are the norm for a good part of the year.

Long range (1000 yard) reloading for 308...168 gr. SMK vs. 175 gr. SMK vs. 185 gr. Berger Juggernaut

1000 yrs is easy enough with a .308. . . as long as you have a long enough barrel. ;) :giggle:

Long range (1000 yard) reloading for 308...168 gr. SMK vs. 175 gr. SMK vs. 185 gr. Berger Juggernaut

In my RPR .308 with a Krieger 24" 1:10 barrel, the Federal Factory GM Berger 185 Jugs averaged 2650 fps using a Magnetospeed v3 (Temp: 61°F, Humidity: 68%, Altitude: 900 ft). Factory FMG 175's gave me an average of 2622 fps on the same day. I had pulled a couple bullets from a 185 Jug and a...

Long range (1000 yard) reloading for 308...168 gr. SMK vs. 175 gr. SMK vs. 185 gr. Berger Juggernaut

I happened to get a good deal on some 185 Jugs a couple months ago and tried them out for the first time. I found a good load with IMR 4064 using 40.9 grs that got me an avg MV of 2550 (SD's in the mid single digits and ES's in the mid teens) and my groups were in the high 3's to low 4's at...

While you can probably make some improvement, I wouldn't say it'd be "significant". IMHO
