    Poor professionalism

There is a smaller precision rifle smith here in Montana who often chambers barrels “while you wait”. Not a bad deal! There are a couple of others who are talented and will get stuff done quickly if you have all the parts in hand. I think there are more and more good “local” precision rifle...

    Rifle Scopes Another Vortex down

Having used plenty of both, I prefer the keyed turrets by a wide margin.

What was your biggest “aha!” Moment as a beginner?

I would absolutely recommend a 22LR as a trainer, I'm more specifically referencing training out a flinch. While what I did worked for me, much better trainers than I have suggested that ball and dummy drills will produce quicker results. You could always ball and dummy a 22LR to start with I...

Gunsmithing Red Loctite for base screws?

I epoxy the rail on and red loctite the screws, but I’m kinda paranoid that way.

What was your biggest “aha!” Moment as a beginner?

That I was flinching badly and needed to stop. My rifle shooting at that point was shooting a sporter weight 30-06 with an iffy recoil pad at groundhogs from the prone. The more I did, the more easy shots I was missing, and I finally admitted to myself that I was flinching and needed to fix...

PRS Talk Shot my first match last week....

It really depends for me on the course of fire. To me, there are clear “dial” stages and clear “hold over” stages, and some that fall in between. I dial by default, but on stages where it is obviously a disadvantage I will switch to holding. The factors for me are time limit, target size...

    Red locktite nut to barrel

Initially I headspace and tighten the nut just like any other barrel nut install. Afterwards I treat it like a shouldered barrel, and use a barrel vise and action wrench for barrel removal and installation. I have plans to add flats to the end of the barrel in order to change without the vise...

    Red locktite nut to barrel

I’ve done it to a handful. It works fine and I screw the barrels on and off afterwards just like a shouldered barrel. It will work just like you’re hoping it will.

Talk me into or out of 6BR for PRS

It’s analysis like that Sheldon that always keeps me on the smaller side of the chambering spectrum. “I can decrease my wind drift by 10%. It’ll just double the recoil, significantly reduce barrel life, and increase barrel heat!” Pass... Also, backstops (or lack of them) that offer nothing...

    Loading for Tomorrow?? Lazy Bastards!

Used to be 90% of my loading was after my wife went to bed the night before a match, or occasionally the morning of the match. I usually don’t sleep very well before a match, due to excitement and knowing I have to get up early. Combine that with getting to bed a few hours late every time and...

Magazines for 6BR, BRA, BRX and Dasher

Out of my TL3, my Primal Rights/AICS is perfect, easily my go to mag and super slick. The only downside is it doesn’t like to have pressure on it, it can bind the bolt up if you do. My unmodified ARC mag is reliable but it is stiffer (more sping pressure). It works fine but it has somewhat...

Bighorn Origin why is no one talking about it

It is less novel than the Nucleus, which it can’t help but be compared to. I don’t necessarily see it as a function of better or worse, but there is less new about it to discuss and generate buzz. Additionally, it won’t be available until August, which IMO is far enough away that it’s harder...

    Rifle Scopes Bushnell Optics Opinions

95% of my competition shooting the last 6 years has been done with an original DMR and a recent HDMR II. They’ve been great scopes, and a gen II for under $1,000 is an excellent way to go. I briefly used a 3-18 Gen II Razor, but actually switched from it back to my original DMR, due to the...

Full length sizing die bottoms out on shell holder but doesnt bump shoulder back enough.

Agreed on the customer service, and I have used it in the past. These days I’m too impatient, if a sizing die is too long I take a little off the bottom with a sanding disc on my angle grinder. Takes 5 minutes or so.

PRS Talk Binoculars or Spotting Scope?

~ 50% of the matches I shoot are “Squad” R.O.’d, so my optic choices are certainly influenced by that. Additionally, I have heard of matches where they don’t want you on glass while others are shooting, but that isn’t the standard in my part of the country (shot 16 matches last year and none...

6 dasher 110 SMK and varget

I shoot that combination in a 26” Kreiger, .135” throat (initially). I ran it up to 2940 (don’t have the notes on the powder charge) but saw a little more pressure than I really liked. Ended up backing down to 31.7 which never showed pressure. Velocity was 2880 when the barrel was fresh.
