Do you use expanding mandrels after a full-length bushing die for neck sizing?

My takeaway from all this was: You only have 4 rifles?

6.5 Grendel Barrel Length for Hunting

I really like my 12.5" Grendel for hunting; it's by far my favorite hunting rifle for thick brush like one can encounter in the southern hardwood forests. With that said, I use a lot of other calibers and don't have examples of all of them in this 12" format, but the Grendel lends itself to good...

Do you use expanding mandrels after a full-length bushing die for neck sizing?

The shoulder support when pushing into the case neck is pretty much the whole point of a mandrel. That is how they produce (at least in theory) less runout. Although as I mentioned earlier in the thread, carbide expander balls in a bushing die (that's not sizing down too much) also gives very...

Do you use expanding mandrels after a full-length bushing die for neck sizing?

Or they just know that marketing terms sell? Maybe I'm just cynical but I suspect that's closer to the full truth. JMHO but I'll take a carbide expander ball over a pull through mandrel any day. Slick and less surface area = less shoulder/neck distortion.

Gunsmithing Go-to for high end files?

Nah. And don't see any need to watch something that by your description attempts to "make me think" about whether something I've seen first hand can really happen. Seems like a waste of time for no benefit. It's not a matter of theory, or thinking it "might" happen - dragging a file backwards...

Do you use expanding mandrels after a full-length bushing die for neck sizing?

You may be stuck with Wilson mandrels for that die; not sure. Several of us here recommended mandrels from SAC or 21st Century among others, which all use a common mandrel type so there are more options. If you can push a .264” bullet in and out by hand, the neck isn’t .263”; it’ll be closer...

Suppressors Glock 1/2-28 barrels are... metric-y!

Be careful with bottoming the muzzle on a "shoulder" inside the piston, for a couple reasons: 1 - Some pistons look like there's an internal shoulder, but if you measure the ID of that shoulder it may be around .465"-.470"+ (nominally about .468"), which is just the internal thread depth for...

Cone drilling for 338 Lapua and 308

Don't put so much faith in the Form 1 groups. There are a few like myself who build their stuff from bar stock in a machine shop and are interested in doing it right, but the large majority are the goofball prepper "solvent trap" people. Those people believe some of the weirdest and dumbest crap...

Gunsmithing Go-to for high end files?

Eh, I’ve seen the real world results too many times, and even did it myself as a kid not knowing any better. That holds a lot more weight than any “test” someone came up with to make you think otherwise. I’m a test and development engineer by trade, have been for many years, and can say for...

Cone drilling for 338 Lapua and 308

This is wrong. Clearance for the marked caliber is one thing. But you can NOT legally increase the caliber of the suppressor. You’re giving bad advice that can land someone in hot water.

Cone drilling for 338 Lapua and 308

Uh, no. It is definitely illegal to "drill it out" for a larger caliber. The caliber marked on the F1 or F4 is the maximum caliber, period. What the OP is asking for is completely illegal to do on his own, and not something any reputable manufacturer would do either.

Gunsmithing Go-to for high end files?

That "properly" is another side of this worth mentioning - it disgusts me how many mechanics and self professed craftsmen scrub their files back and forth both directions across a part. (We're talking normal files here, not diamond stones or specialty stuff made for cutting both directions.)...

    Decibels, barriers and hearing protection

Along the lines of the acoustic panel question - I saw something years ago about using a row of tires stacked together like a tube, about 6 ft long, mounted on a bench in front of your shooting bench such that your rifle muzzle is inside the first couple tires. Obviously you'd need your own...

    6gt

Nah, it started that way with a brand new chamber that I cut myself, and hasn’t changed much. But I’m some kind of idgit this morning, sorry. My load is for H4350; using RL 16 for the Creed not the GT, and was thinking one while typing the other. Carry on…

Do you use expanding mandrels after a full-length bushing die for neck sizing?

Despite how many people promote mandrels here as the ultimate neck expanding mechanism, I’ve had very good results with carbide expander balls too, as long as they are sized correctly. I lube case necks though, and the combination of lube and slick carbide means no shoulder movement when...

Do you use expanding mandrels after a full-length bushing die for neck sizing?

Hmm. It’d be odd and very nebulous to define a specific part shape by the end result of a variable process. Keep it simple: by the definition everyone here uses, a mandrel is a straight shaft that expands the neck as it’s pushed into the case, forcing the case neck to align with the straight...

Wow. I’m getting 2920 with 1 full grain less than that; 36.3gr H4350, 112 MB, BR4. What barrel length, is it short? I’m shooting a 26”. Edit - sorry, big mistake; I was thinking H4350 while reading and typing RL16. Disregard please.

You can't. Anyone that says you can is leading you wrong.

Do you use expanding mandrels after a full-length bushing die for neck sizing?

A couple things to unpack here: - If you're deforming tips, the problem is the seating stem, not the annealing. The tip should never touch the stem; you'll want to either buy the correct stem to match that bullet, or modify the one you have. There are several methods for that - lapping the stem...

Do you use expanding mandrels after a full-length bushing die for neck sizing?

One of mine is a black nitride mandrel from them as well - definitely my favorite, wish I'd bought all of them that way. It feels smoother in operation and has much less chance of galling vs TiN or bare steel mandrels, and was pretty reasonably priced (when I got mine, haven't checked in a...
