    Annealing

Re: Annealing I insert mine for about 6 to 6.5 seconds in a single flame propane torch in the light blue part of the flame. This gets it just right. From left to right, #5-7 look good.

    Explain this if you can

Re: Explain this if you can My first guess is you screwed the seating die too far down into the press, and the die made contact with the shoulder when seating and crushed the case. If so, I would unscrew your die about 6 or 7 turns, and check it on an empty case to make sure you are not...

    Carbon wrapped barrels

Re: Carbon wrapped barrels The several carbon barrels that I shot were all good shooters. But after 3-4 shots, the barrel mirage was too intense. The target was moving around so much it was hard to take an accurate shot. If you plan to shoot only 1 or 2 rounds, like in a hunting situation, I...

Range Report Possibly a stupid question about .308 bullet?

Re: Possibly a stupid question about .308 bullet? It could be 30 cal bullets for the 30 carbine. Weigh them and measure the diameter with a caliper and see what you get. Typically they are in the 100 to 110 grain weight range. They could also be 30-30 lever gun bullets in 150 or 170 grain.

    Primer Pin Whole

Re: Primer Pin Whole I would switch primers. I don't think it's the powder charge causing the problem. I would switch to a different magnum primer, like a CCI #250. They have the thickest primer cup available.

    243 win necks splitting

Re: 243 win necks splitting The Hornady annealing kit works well for me, and it's only $50. And you really don't need that. A cordless drill with a socket that fits the case head and a propane torch will work. 6 to 7 seconds in the light blue flame and you're good.

Range Report Berger 230 OTM out of 300wm

Re: Berger 230 OTM out of 300wm An 11" twist is right on the edge of stability for a 230 OTM. I run the 225's out of a 11" twist just fine. From talking to Litz, he said this bullets NEEDS a 10" twist. But I have not tried it to see.

    243 win necks splitting

Re: 243 win necks splitting Your cases got work hardened, and needed to get annealed. I anneal my cases after about 2-3 firings. After 3-4 firings, the necks get brittle and won't hold a bullet consistantly from case to case. Annealing is the answer. Start over with a new batch of brass and...

question on reloading .223....... .224 bullets?

Re: question on reloading .223....... .224 bullets? Yes, a 223 Rem fires a .224" bullet. Buy a reloading manual and read the intro about reloading, and look at the data on 223 Rem. It will list the bullets there and powder charges to work up to.

Range Report Berger 230 OTM out of 300wm

Re: Berger 230 OTM out of 300wm Yes, I love Hornady's 225 bthp. I'm running them at 2802 fps in my 300WM with Retumbo out past a mile. I have thought about playing with the 230's, but at twice the cost of the Hornady's, I don't think I'll get twice the performance! It would be a great bulet...

    Range Report barrel settling in?

Re: barrel settling in? Correct with what was said above. Heat will play a lot with ammo temps and speeds, even with your extreme powder, like Varget. The extreme powders help minimize the effect of outside temps, but they don't eleminate it. And yes, barrels will pick up some speed after the...

Groups opening up at longer range

Re: Groups opening up at longer range If you want a long range load, test it at long range. I test my initial loads at 300 yards. At this distance, you can see what the true accuracy is. If you have a calm day, try it at 400 to 600 yards, and use that load. Often times the best 100 yard load...
