    That's exactly as intellegent of a response as I expected. The OP's bolt lugs were obviously engaged in the extension when the overpressure occurred. Look at the picture of the back of the lugs. They are deformed. Got a picture of the bolt lugs from your kaboom?

    The AR-15 design does not allow for the firing pin to be struck by the hammer unless the bolt lugs are already engaged in the barrel extension. The design would be incredibly unsafe otherwise.     If the goal is 55's as fast as possible I would stay away from a 1:8 twist. No reason to risk blowing up light weight varmint bullets when even a 1:12 will stabilize them fine. 1:9 would be an excellent choice and at Creedmoor speeds will even stabilize a 75 ELD-M.

    It would work perfect with just a tiny amount of material removed at the rear of the bolt notch. I've done it several times and it's easy to make it look good. It's a spot no one sees so you hit it with the Dremel until it clears and put some black touch up paint on it.
