Rifle Scopes 0 MOA base - 10x SS - Will it work?

Hi experts!
Being new and making lots of mistakes, I bought a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308 and put a SWFA 10X SS on top of a 0 MOA Leupold base and Leupold "High" rings. I'm going to take a class on LR shooting and just read that I should have gotten a 20 MOA base. Does anyone know if I can shoot at 1000 yards with this setup?

The high rings will frustrate you more than the base. The SS has enough travel for you to get away with a 0 MOA base. That said, next time get a 20 MOA base. It puts the scope closer to its optical center even for short range shooting.

I really didn't want the high rings but the guy at the gun shop said that the mediums wouldn't fit and there really isn't much clearance between the AO and the rear base. He has the scope pushed really far forward though. If it was pulled a little more to the rear the mediums would have worked but he insisted it should be where he mounted it. Admittedly I'm a noob so I went with his recommendation. I can always replace it once I have a little more idea of what I really need.

I started out with a Remington 700 LTR with SWFA SS 10x, Leupold high rings and 0 MOA base. It works fine. I had no problem zeroing for 100Y and I could easily reach 1000 yards using handloads and 175g Sierra Matchkings. That's the beauty of having 120 total MOA in the SS scope. I later switched to a 20 MOA base which gives me enough elevation to around 1300 yards with my handloads, although that's a bit beyond the realistic range of the 308.

For now, I'd say you're good to go.

Your picked a good rifle, and 26" barrel is enough to get you out to 1000 yards.

Check your eye relief relative to your cheek rest position to see how far back or forward you should mount your scope. For SWFA 10x42 eye relief is about 4".

You probably could have gone with medium height rings with 42mm scope objective. The high rings are usually for 50-56mm scope objectives, but there is of course variability.

The high rings may give you trouble in maintaining a good check rest position, as 700 SPS varmit does not have an adjustable cheek piece. But then best way to know is just to go and shoot to see if it will be a problem for you or not, hopefully you just won't have to worry about it.
