I was waiting for a CA state test and was board sitting in my truck. I got out the calipers and started to take some #. Is .008 going to have an affect on my accuracy at all.
By the way I am loading 175smks over 42.5 grs of 4640, Oal of 2.800 or so I thought. I have found a variance of .008

+1.. Chad beat me to it.

The guys above are right about the OALs, but .008 can be the difference between being slightly off of the lands and being slightly jammed. I'm only mentioning this because SMKs HATE being jammed in some rifles. Get yourself a chamber gauge so that you'll know at what length your bullets will contact the lands and get a comparator that will allow you to measure from the ogive.

A couple more weeks of saving my lunch money and I'll be able to afford an ogive.

is that .08 or .008? .008 is almost unavoidable, and excellent variance in my opinion...for OAL that is. Measure from the ogive.

Re: .008 is it that a big difference.

As said, .008" in OAL is noise....

.008" variance at the ogive-not so much. That would not be "good", esp if you load near lands. I like loads that like to be .015" or so off the lands anyway.

It shoots that consistently. The ogive tool is not a good meal for lunch. Save your money and send it to me. I need more powder, primer, and bullets.

You have to use your caliper. The head of the brass to the flat of the comparator nut is fit between the caliper jaws. You can zero out the comparator nut with your caliper before you measure to get the actual over all length to the ogive.
