I just aquired a Rem 700 .223 w/ varmint profile 26" barrel and it has a 1/12 twist barrel. I zeroed it the other day w/ Hornady 55 grain (not match just bulk ammo) and it was shooting sub-moa @ 100 yards. If I attempt to move to a heavier load (I don't reload....not just yet, so it would have to be factory load) will the 1/12 barrel work or will I need to get faster twist rate barrel. Also, what is a heavier grained bullet (again needs to be a factory load) for coyote hunting that would work well in a 1/12 twist barrel? Thanks in advance.

55gr is about as heavy as you can go anything more and the rounds will not stabilize.

I have a 1:12" twist PSS that will shoot Hornady 55 gr. Varmint Ammo .5MOA or better. I fired it at 330 yards today (first time past 200 with it) and it held pretty tight. Just fired a 3-shot group to figure elevation. It was about an inch, with 2 of the 3 shots touching.

I tried some heavier factory loadings and none of 'em would shoot much better than 1 MOA.

To move into the 60+ grains you will need something a bit faster to stabilize those bullets accurately.

I appreciate all of the info fellas....that is what I was afraid of w/ the 1/12 twist barrel. Looks like I will be sticking to 55 grain ammo as I don't want to re-barrel at this time.

Any 50-55 grain load that will shoot in your rifle. Yotes are preety big targets.
