I have a 300 weatherby sporter that pretty much never gets shot, but as the pounds climb on my target rig, this sporter will get used more during hunting season. So I am looking for something in the 1-4 range to put on it. My primary concerns are cost and ability to withstand heavy recoil. An added plus (but not required) would be target turrets.

I would like to come in under 300ish because this gun gets less than 100 rounds a year. Any higher than that I would go with the vortex pst 1-4, which I would like but just can't justify it for the amount it gets used.

Looked at the standard leupold hunting lineup, and even the hi-lux leatherwood cmr (there is one cheapish on the sample list).

"Stands up to heavy recoil" and "under $300" aren't very compatible requirements.... but, the closest thing I would try is the Weaver Dangerous Game 1-5x24, which is at least intended for your exact use. It's currently $411 at Amazon.com but in the past has occasionally been $300 or less. I have not seen a price nearly that low anywhere else - I think Amazon must have bought a bunch at some point:

I guess the Weaver "Classic Extreme" noted above would be an OK choice. I haven't had that model but did own a 2.5-10x50 "Classic Extreme" from Natchez, and thought it was pretty much a $300 scope (what it sold for), not hardly a higher end scope like some old forum posts suggest. A long time ago Weaver's "Classic Extreme" line was their high end, but what Natchez now sells is not the exact same scope, but from what I understand is a Natchez-only special. They are legitimate Weaver scopes, but made in the Philippines and not quite equal to the made in Japan Weavers.
