I picked up 2 sheets today and he has 5 more. They are $85 a piece for AR500 1/8" thick 5 foot by 6 foot.

If you are interested, he is in Pittsburg TX and I can get you contact info.

I have a chance to purchase a 5 foot by 6 foot sheet of 1/8" thick AR500 plate for $80

I know it is thin but would it hold up at all to a 30-06.....Accubond load....at or beyond 600yds.....NEVER any closer?

Looking to just use it as a back ground to help us spot misses from further out than 600yds. Would be shooting a hanging gong in front of it. With the dirt backstop covered in grass, spotting misses is tough to impossible for us.

Re: Will it hold up..1/8" AR500 and 30-06 at 600yds +?

With the top of the sheet angled toward the shooter so the impact is diverted down I would think the AR500 would last a very long time against 30-06 impacts past 500yds.

I would recommend learning to spot the bullet trace instead of looking for the impact as well.

Hell of a price on a sheet that size!

I am always up for learning....help me out?

We shoot with a big tall stand of trees behind the target and the leaves or branches are usually moving. I usually shoot with my wife and a friend who is just getting into longer shooting.

You use binocs....spotter?

Shooter try to see it?

I am shooting a 30-06 pushing 180gr bullet almost 2900fps with no muzzle break so I have hard time maintaining my sight picture through the shot.

What do we need to do?

Trace is easies to spot from directly behind and just above the shooter using a decent spotting scope. Set the focus at say 300yds if shooting a 600yd target. Do not focus your attention on the target, but instead look about 3 feet over the target and try to keep the focus of your eye at 300yds. When your eye catches the bullet, then practice following it to the target with your eye focus. This can also be done with a rifle scope to either side of the shooter, the closer to the shooter the better. The trace will then appear to come from low on the shooter side and will appear to move much faster than when viewed from behind the shooter. (It is also much harder to see and follow). Depending on humidity and light conditions, the spotter may see the actual bullet in flight. On humid and overcast days the trace is often much more visible than the bullet.
As far as seeing your own trace, I will tell you it is possible, even with heavy recoil. I would suggest practicing on spotting trace from other shooters and then when you really know what you are looking for start trying to spot your own trace.

Hope this helps, and have fun...

I've shot Hardox 600 plate (600 brinell and 10mm thick ~.5") from 40meters with .308w (185 scenar @ 2400fps not FMJ mind you - will do that in due time) and all what happened is top protective Zinc layer on the plate sheared off and no damage to the plate itself. Plate is angled and bolted to a chain so it moves freely. I will shoot it with 170 Lockbase@ 2800fps next year

(december is kinda busy month) and i think it should survive without serious damage...

I have only gone out and shot once since I had them made. We do more shooting in the Summer as us Texans do better in the heat than the current 20deg weather.

Shot at 700yds and 1000yds. They will hold up plenty long for me but I do not have anywhere really convenient to shoot.

At 700 and 1000 the impacts left a little dent and I would venture a guess at them being 1/32" of a crater....maybe less.

Plenty of fun will be had for how much I have in them.
