Rifle Scopes 10 X fixed for 1000?

Years ago there was a thread on using a 10X for distance bv I can't find it as I think the search function is limited to two years.

The mirage issue is a problem, as witha fixed scope one is at a disadvantage to variable power.

Do any of of you use a fixed in F class? Shooting Palma, one has no magnification, right, so does anyone use a fixed 10 power?

Years ago, a friend in the armorer section of the Marksmanship Training Unit said snipers in his unit were using 10 power fixed scopes. Do any in any branch still use them?

Just got a mark iv 10x again

Great glass; very sharp, simple and dependanble, and also, cheap!

Re: 10 X fixed for 1000?

it all depends on what you're trying to do. are you planning on shooting this rifle competitively @ 1000y?

the army still uses a leupold mk 4 fixed 10 with M3 knobs on the M24 (but i guess that era is coming to an end with the M24E1).

Re: 10 X fixed for 1000?

I shot many 1000 yard matches using a straight 10X years ago. It was no problem at all.

Not sure why a 10X would be a disadvantage in mirage, as lower powers do better than higher powers in mirage. Perhaps you mean you can dial a power lower than 10X when shooting in heavy mirage, but do you really want to do that at 1000 yards?

Re: 10 X fixed for 1000?

I like fixed power scopes because they're usually more clear than their variable counterparts and reasonably priced. Most people I know go with variables though and the past few scopes I've bought have all been variables although I am contemplating a super sniper HD for my 700ltr.

Re: 10 X fixed for 1000?

Thanks, everyone for the good posts. I am toying with the idea of shooting in an F class match with this scope rather than using variable powered scopes as are the only ones I have used before at 1000. It can be done according to your posts. As to mirage on a hot summer day, I was wondering how it would be if you had only a 10 x and the clear was given begin firing, and you could not dial it down even to 9 x as to how big of a disadvantage it might be, probably negligible. I wonder how many shooters are using fixed powered scopes now-days in matches at distance. One thing is for sure, these early fixed powered Leupolds can be bought for so much less, it is one way to get to particpate in this sport without a lot of money.

Thanks all.

Re: 10 X fixed for 1000?

I have shot quite a few F class 1000 yard matches. I'd say you CAN do it with a fixed 10X but I wouldnt. Not many do. Attend a LR F-Class match with your fixed 10X and I'll bet you a shiny nickle you will be quite the lonesome Bob. It might worth noting at this point few High Masters used fixed 10xs (I want to say NONE but you never know)

On mirage during hot summer LR shoots. Seems to me a good scope, and Loopy is good enough, does very well at 10X. Its mirage and high power scopes where trouble starts. Takes really good glass to stay at 25 to 32X in a mid august, mid afternoon match.

Lots of Nightforces on the line of a 1000 yard F-Class match. They are not there to impress other shooters.

Good luck

Re: 10 X fixed for 1000?

Palma has giant targets and everyone uses diopter inserts.

F-Class: get the mag range with the highest ualways usable bottom end and the finest reticle you can. You will like the top end when you can use it.

I have no use for a fixed 10X, I don't give a rat's ass that some folks limit themselves with such because some of the military still makes do with one.
The only precision rifle comp I've seen that had a fixed 10X in the top ten was the recent ASC match that all the shooters shot FN 308's with the same USO ST10's on all of them. Every where else you find 5-25's predominantly in the winner's circle.

Put the MK4 in a backup role or enjoy the heck out of it, it your scope, not mine. I really like the 16X MK4 (only Luepy I can say that about, except the 6.5-20 EFR for sillywet).

Re: 10 X fixed for 1000?

The top shooters are top shooters because they can dope wind and properly and consistently apply all the fundamentals. The magnification of their scopes is irrelevant as most of them can shoot just as well with iron sights.

Yeap. While I did see a super sniper and a bushnell FFP NF benchrest models were the norm.
