LL will tell you that it could be done with an 18" barrel. So there you go. 22" barrel is plenty long. It's the shooter and the projos that will get you there. Good luck.

Re: 1000yd .308?

DesertHK,
Thats the reason I ask. I have heard the same thing but I dont know that I believe it can be done with any velocity behind it. I am ordering a custom built rifle and have almost settled on a 24" barrel. Just seein what people thought

Re: 1000yd .308?

You should get a 26" or longer ordered for a 308, because I don't think you can get it done with a 24"... you'll probably have a hard time with 26" as well, but that is a different discussion.

And for the record, I don't "tell" people anything... I have shown people it can be done, at sea level with factory ammo to 1000 yards, but I don't "tell" people anything.

At elevation like home in Denver it is easier.

Re: 1000yd .308?

my question would be how often are you going to be shooting to 1k? is it a dedicated 1k rifle or are you going to be doing a lot of positional work and/or moving around a bunch with it at close ranges? if it is a dedicated prone rifle, i'd probably be leaning toward a 26"+ barrel. if it is a combined use rifle, 22"-24" would probably be a decent length. if you are going to be moving around with it a bunch or working around obstacles and only shoot to 1k every now and then, a shorter barrel may be a better choice.

Re: 1000yd .308?

It will be a combined use rifle which for me means I will be moving with it quite a bit. I dont have many 1000 yd ranges near me so it will be an occasional 1k shooter. I have considered 22" as well. Still havnt made up my mind.

Re: 1000yd .308?

For practical purposes, 22" is the best medium for a 308 to 1000 yards... I have more 22" 308s than any other length and can get 2700fps from factory ammo with the majority of them.

The Harbinger was originally designed with a 22" barrel back in 2004 as we found it to be the best happy medium, although we would get the question daily about 24" to 26".

Re: 1000yd .308?

Lowlight,
Thanks Lowlight, nice videos too. Is there a substantial difference between the 24" and 22"(in velocity).

In addition, i am looking to have GAP build this for me. Has anyone used the Templar Action? Cant afford the Surgeon so its between a Templar and Rem Action

My 22" Pac-Nor gets to 1k with 175 smk's over 45.0 Varget, in 35.3 Moa(37.0 IPHY)at 90-95* F,... stone cold barrel.

Deltaj I see you are in town here. If you want to grab coffee and talk rifles shoot me a PM.

I can save you probably asking lots of stupid questions I've already asked.

The difference between the 22 and 24 is pretty negligable.

Any action GAP is selling will be great, but the Surgeon just has that extra sex appeal that'll get the range weenies all in a flurry when they see it.

Go 22" and get the Templar, you'll be happy. </div></div>

I can't speak for the center or top group but when I shot that bottom right group it wasn't to shabby :p

Chadtrg42, it appears LL just kinda did it, kinda did it pretty good if I don't say so myself!
