Rifle Scopes 10x Fixed Scope??

Re: 10x Fixed Scope??

I wouldn't call it the best setup, but it is capable of 1000 yard shooting. 10x was used for years by the Corps on M40a1 and a3's. If that is what you got use it, if you don't like it get something else. No one can tell you if you will like it or not, get in the field and see how 10x treats you.

Re: 10x Fixed Scope??

all my rifles have fixed power scopes and my long range .243 sports a 10x leupold, I really like it.
You can shoot a ways if you have your dope right with any scope really. just my $.02

Re: 10x Fixed Scope??

And now the Corps uses a variable 3-12x scope.

Variable gives you more options in a scope in that you can adjust your power setting if you need more or less power depending on target and distance but fixed 10x can work as well and has for years. Variable powered scopes now are not what they used to be and are far better mechanically especially if you choose a quality scope. They can take alot of abuse and continue to function. Give a read

Re: 10x Fixed Scope??

short answer: no
long answer:

i was flying the fixed 10 flag until i looked side by side through several scopes.

across a parking lot (~75y) was an open garage door. the fixed 10s field of view was good enough to fill that garage door.

however a variable, was able to adjust down to show a dumpster and another garage bay, and then zoom in to actually look into the open door and see what was going on.

that was the day i resigned from the fixed 10 and why i got a variable

BUT

i was buying with the intent to get out to matches in the future and not wanting to be left with limitations.

the glass with good reputations negate the 'less moving parts' argument against variables.

Re: 10x Fixed Scope??

I understand the versatility of a vari, I keep seeing fixed on rifles with mildot. I was wondering if I was missing something, or over researching quality vari optics.

Thank you everyone for your response and time.

Re: 10x Fixed Scope??

Not sure where you are looking but I would venture to say there are alot more variables on rifles here on this site than fixed 10x.

Re: 10x Fixed Scope??

For the most part it is true that Fixed Power scopes are stronger than Variable Power scope but not all scopes are created equally. The USO ST10, Leupold Mark 4, and the S&B 10x are some of the best fixed power scopes on the market. Yes a 10x scope will do 1K with no problem but a little more power is nice to have. We recommend 14x to 17x.

The US ARMY has been using the Leupold Mark 4 M3 10x for a longtime but the are also using a lot of variable powered scopes also. The USMC Sniper is now using the S&B 3-12x50mm w/ the GEN II reticle.

The MIL-DOT reticle will work but I would recommend a mil line reticle such as the Leupold TMR or the USO GAP.

Here is a USO ST10s on a M40A1.
