Looking at trying a new bullet and was wondering about the 155 lapua. I currently use the 168 smk for my 600 yard f class shoots. I normally don't shoot the 1000 yard shoots. I have a 1/12 twist 20 " barrel rem 700 sps tactical. Wondering if anyone had tried that bullet using the same setup I have and what your results were. Thanks

If your not shooting past 600 yard but on rare occasions then 168's do great & I really see little difference from 168 to 175 @ 600, but The 175 sierras do really good when you push past the 1st node of 2580/2600 fps & get up around 2700 fps.
You definitely need to load work the .308 155's to burn more Vel. and you need to get them up to 2900 fps to really shine. It just depends on how serious you are about your 600 score .

your 1-12 twist is great . BUT.. You Wont go 155's anyway, don't even do it . you would be wasting your time & money ( with that barrel 20" length ) .. & I Personally would NOT go the .30 cal. 155 scenar or berger bullet route because your barrel is no longer than 20" and You are screwed & you can not punch-up the Vel. on 155's to make them perform .
You need minimum of 24" of bore to 'really' pump the 155's to there full potential .
-----> Go with the 175's or 178's as '1st choice' . with the 20" barrel .
then 168's as your 2nd choice . Seriously the standard 175 smk's are No Slouch .

I actually also shoot 175 smk however at the 600 yard distance I cant get them to do better than the 168. I believe my average was 2650 with 175 @ 44.5 varget and the 168 are about 2680 at 45.0. both of those were out of federal brass. Since making the switch to Lapua brass the 168 seem to like the 44.0 varget best. Haven't chrono'd that load yet but 10 ringed it 3 and x ringed it twice at the 600 yard line

Out of a 20" barrel if your getting the 175s that fast (2650fps) then you cant much as for more. Lapua brass has more case capacity than federal brass you should see a bit more velocity AND improvement in accuracy aswell . Fed brass is weird after couple firings. Neck tension will vary alot. Youll see that lapua is much better.

In that setup, you might want to take a look at the Berger 168 Hybrid. The 168 Hybrid has a very good BC, a short bearing surface, and can be pushed relatively fast with minimal pressure issues, even out of a relatively short barrel. With a 20" 12-twist barrel, you'd want a slightly faster, more energy dense powder such as H4895 or 8208 XBR. Trying to make a 155 that already has a disadvantage in BC (relative to other choices you could try) work well in the short barrel is likely to be an exercise in frustration.

Another possibility might be the Berger 175 Tactical bullet. Again, good BC, very easy to load/tune, and you ought to be able to get enough velocity out of a 20" pipe for 600 yd if using a slightly faster powder.
