Re: 155gr M1A loads

I'm hoping to be done with load development and final testing within 60 rounds of getting my next scope....

46.0 Varget shot pretty well in my OCW test, but started showing very faint pressure signs when I did 5-round groups to confirm it. This is with USGI brass and seated to 2.82-3.

The velocities are also higher than are probably reasonable from a 22-inch tube and the H2O capacity. According to my sources, 2835 or so should be as fast as you can go and still be at nominal max pressure. I don't know whether you can safely go much faster with higher-capacity cases.

45.5 was also pretty good, but 46.0 was closer to the middle of the groups' elevation clusters.

This has been the case with both SMKs and Hornady A-Max.

Re: 155gr M1A loads

suggest loading for the M1A a little lighter than a bolt rifle I use 168 and use 42 gr then 44.5 in the bolt rifle works well and I hear the action like a little lighter load also
Just a suggestion
My M-21 wouks real well with a lighter load

Re: 155gr M1A loads

Oh yeah, the port pressure prediction for 46.0 Varget was 13.8kpsi-piezo, which is well within tolerance for the M14 gas system.

However, it also predicted 2730 fps mv, and my rifle was giving 100 fps MORE than that. Lot-to-lot variation of 10% faster would boost predicted chamber pressure to 63.5kpsi, port pressure to just over 14k (about 400 psi below tolerance-max) and mv to about 2850 fps.

So, I've concluded that my Varget is too fast to use 46.0 without using some of my safety margin that I would prefer to keep available.
