Hey guys just finally putting this together after having the barrel sitting here for a year. Wondering what kind of velocities (average) you are getting with say the 120 class bullets?

Tell me about your build!

I don't mean to thread-jack, but how much does your gun weigh? I am considering going to a 16" variation instead of my 18 heavy barreled Grendel. Anyways, just let me know. I have my eyes on this thread for some good ballistic data too...

To be honest man I don't have it built. I'm going as light as possible though I think. I would think it would end up around 6-7lbs. This barrel doesn't weigh but 2 lbs I'd guess.

I'll get more info when It's together as far as weight.

Tac and BLC-2 will get you in the 24/2500 range out of a 16 inch barrel with a 120. Don't maxt it out and try for more or it will not shoot well. AA2520 is another powder that will get you to the same velocities and shoot very well.

I'm still yet to get my grendel but I'm thinking about trying the leverrevolution powder with some 95gr Vmaxs & 123 Amaxs. I've been waiting on Longrange30 to comment back on his tests with it but it sounded promising, expecially with the lighter bullets.
I tried to compromise with my self on barrel lenght, I was going to get a 24" initially but thought that would pretty much make it a pure bench gun so I ended up with with a 20".
I figured 20" isn't too long to limit my ability to carry it and shoot off hand if needed and the velocity are still up there.
I will mostly be using my Grendel for farther out shooting on steel and coyotes.
If I need something for closer in I have my 16" AR in 5.56.

20 inch in a Grendel is optimum for performance in a gun that is not a pain to maneuver with. I have shot them all from 11.5 to 28'' and the 28 does well but is just toooooo much. 20'' will get you to power factor for 1000 yard, and isn't like carrying a spear. 18'' is great and will get you to a 1000 with practice, 16 is perfect for a hard hitting 0-600 yard rig with the ability to go further, with effort.
I am planning on gettin my next 20'' together this weekend. Fingers crossed and Santa getting it all done of course.

Have you got any idea where the burn rate falls with Leverrevolution? Is it a single or double base?

Personally, after owning two and seeing many others, for pure velocity (not necessarily a bench gun, either), I went with the 24". However, 20" is still a good compromise. I had considered, the AA 19.5" version. I wouldn't go shorter than that though. IMO, the velocity loss brings the cartridge down below what it's intended purpose is. I would get it with a full length gas tube for sure though.

Also FWIW, I have now found my single best load for the 6.5 Grendel using 29 gr. of IMR8208 behind a 123 high BC bullet. (Hornady, Sierra, Lapua). Ether the velocity is way better than I think or the bullets fly better than they say because I'm getting around 2700 fps with no pressure signs. I've always found I either max out initial pressure to quickly to get good velocity, or I max out port pressure to get it, and that causes damage.

Honestly I have no idea, I'm a novice as far as realoading goes. I've just heard that you can get more velocity out of the grendel with that leverrevolution powder than others. LR was thinking it was really gonna shine on the lighter pills but he hasn't commented back on his results with it.

I have to comment on the AA2520. In the past, it seemed like the only powder that would get me great velocity out of my rifles, without overpressuring either at the chamber or the port. But, I always found I had to load summer for summer and winter for winter. The reason, is without enough initial pressure, peak pressure occurs too far down the barrel. So, in the cold when the AA2520 doesn't light off so well, I'd get the issues. I had to STEP UP the load to make it work right. Then when temps warmed up, bring the load back down. I probably ruined 300-400 pieces of brass figuring that out.

With the 8208, it's fast burning but has a soft pressure ceiling. I'm never going to overpressure at the port because of the burn rate. From there I can just work up to where the load works.

As I've said before in other posts, the issue I have with the Grendel (and the 6.8 SPC too) is that you have an increase in case volume and that takes up the latitude you used to have when reloading .223/5.56. You start to see problems with them when you get the carbine length gas tubes.

LeverRevolution falls right next to BL-C(2) and WIN748 on the burn rate chart which is why alot of Grendel shooters are so interested in trying it.

I have some 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips with 28.0gr. to 32.0gr. to be tested. Also have loaded 123gr. Hornady A-MAX's with 29.0gr. to 31.8gr. to be tested all have AA brass, CCI#450 Primers and a OAL of 2.250".

I will be testing out of a 18"with Sabre bbl w/ 1-7.5 twist.

I have not been able to get to the range to test and chronograph these because of the snowy weather.


I will definetly post the results when i get a chance to shoot them.

Win748, BL-C(2), AA2520, TAC, X-Term, LVR, Benchmark (light bullets), 8208xbr, and some of the Vihta Vuori powders seem to be the optimum powders for the Grendel. Stick to the"ball" powders. I mainly only use Win748 AA2520 BL- C(2) - In order.

I will like to try the new Hodgdon CFE 223 powder also with my Grendel whenever my local shops get some in. Some others are having some luck with IMR 8208XBR too.

I have read some posts on the Grendel forum where guys are getting great accuracy and velocity with 31.5gr.-32.0gr. of LeveRevolution with 123gr. A-MAX's and the 120gr. Barnes bullets.

I recently tested some 107gr. SMK's and 28.0gr. to 29.0gr. of Benchmark and was very surprised in the accuracy i got - 1/2 MOA out to 300yrds. I didnt have my chrony that day to test them tho. I usually dont have luck with the lighter bullets because of my 1-7.5 twist rate. Like i said on the last post, thats where the LeveRevlolution will do its best with the Grendel with the lighter bullets, im assuming.

Why stick with ball powders? That's the biggest reason IMO, people are having issues with reloading this cartridge. You can't work up summer and winter loads. Temp sensitivity is huge with this.

And, FWIW, Hodgdon, shows Win 748, BL-C2 just faster than LeverRevolution, Waaaay slower than XMR8208 and any of the 4895's.

How is the factory wolf multi purpose tactical ammo?

I'll post some info in the next few days when I get it complete.

16" AA Barrel
Vortex flash hider
Mega Upper and Lower
Magpul MOE OD stock and grip
Daniel Defense low pro gas block
DPMS Rifle Length Knurled handguard...

Should be ok?

120 Amax probably won't chamber because of the Ogive. Hornady did the 123 AMAX for the Grendel, so be advised. I have run into this problem before.

I have seen more than few AA Factory Grendels that would not chamber a 120. Different chambers in different rifles may swallow it just fine.

I have reloaded using both 120gr SMKs and 120gr Berger VLDs with BLC-2 (I don't have my load data book on me now to give you exact specs), and they ran good, but like I said before, my rifle LOVEs the aforementioned round.

just picked up the Hodgdon 2012 magazine with all the new loads.

Has a big article on CFE 223 powder and alot of load data for it.

It falls right after Leverevolution, Win748 and BLC2 on the burn rate chart and its a spherical powder.

This will HAVE to be tested in my Grendel. The article where the guys tested says they got some of the best accuracy and velocity with it.



Cant wait to find some and do some testing!!

I am running an 18 inch upper, with Hornady 123 Amax,it ran around 2375fps, with my handloads 30.3 grains AA2520, Lapua 123, 2480fps, i stuck with this load because it trumphed all my other offerings in both speed and accuracy. I was surprised how slow these loads were, but my Oehler is reliable and accurate. I think 22 inch is really a good lenght for the Grendel for getting the best out of the cartridges ballistics. I have seen some folks using fluted barrels to save weight as they went with the longer barrels.
Rifle has 18 inch BHW 1/8 twist barrel, got this before Caudle seem to have all the problems, old RRA upper/lower, LMT stock, YHM rifle lenght upper and a NXS 2.5-10x24 to top her off.

those are some of the slowest ftps that i have scene out of a 18" barrel. What does the factory 123 amax run at for you?

nevermind, just reread your post. my 24" gets around 2650 out of the factory amax. cant believe that 6" longer barrel gets 300 ftps more out of that round.

AA2520 is the most temperature sensitive powder I've ever used! Nearly 150fps difference between summer and winter! I use it for fireforming in my 6mmART40 and cheap blasting ammo in 223 only.

It's nice to see a confirmation of my theory.

My current load (.1 less than max load in Lapua brass with magnum primers, 123 Scenars) shoots great in winter, but it's too hot in the summer. I tried standard primers, but it wouldn't cycle correctly because the ignition was too quick and it blew its wad before the bolt could do it's thing. I have to have separate loads with AA2520. I'm going to experiment with powders, but I haven't had the opportunity yet.

Got it done today! Just tested it a few rounds and functions fine. I'm hopefully going to shoot it in the next day or two and see how it works with the Wolf and Hornady.

Its kinda wierd....I saw this EXACT same rifle on BCM Co. website with the same white background. It kinda looks like you blackouted (photoshopped) the BCM logo on the upper reciever right in front of the charging handle......kinda similar I guess??!!!

My AA 16" GDMR is getting an average of 2445 fps using the following reload data:123 grains Hornady A-Max, AA brass, 30.8 grains AA2520, OAL-2.260"

I gave up on the 123 Lapua Scenars and SMK because the Hornady provided the best accuracy so far.

I had the same thing happen with a 1911 I sold on AR15. I took some professional white background pics with with my 5DMkII and some strobes and I got accused of being a liar and misrepresenting the gun I was selling.

A virgin Hornady piece of brass, loaded w/29 gr. of XMR8208 primed with a Win Small rifle behind a 123 Sierra in front of a mag full of them. Velocity is outstanding with this load.

What kind of MV are you seeing with that load out of your barrel? I have six lbs of 8208 and have been looking for something to do with it...

In the cold, 2660. In the summertime, 2700. Cold as in low 20's to single digits. Heat, this year, 103. <span style="color: #6600CC">Edit II: the 2700 chronograph was taken in August here at around 80 deg.</span>

The good thing though is I'm not having to save winter loads for winter and summer for summer, like with AA2520. This load shoots it all.</span>

One day I hope to have a rifle so nice that internet-dwellers call BS on me when I show them pics because it is just that good.

I'd say it was a huuge misguided compliment.

C'mon longerange30, it's ok, we all step on our pee pees once in awhile.

Save face and step up with an apology, it shows that while you have a quick fuse, you at least have character.
