How well do the 168 gr Amax handle transitional and subsonic flight? at approximantely what range would this bullet begin to go subsonic when fired from a .308 win at 2700fps at 1100 ft above sea level.

Re: 168gr AMAX

Not true. The 168 AMAX is not the same as the 168 SMK. The AMAX has a higher BC and does better through transonic.

According to JBM you are still at 1217fps at 1000 yards at 59 degrees with that load. Still supersonic. 10.7 mils or 36.7 MOA to get there.

That said you should be able to get them easily around 2750fps from a 308.

Works fine from my factory tactical Remington at 2630ish and 961' ASL at 1000y in good wind condidtions...

Re: 168gr AMAX

Thats and impressive grp NC, especially since it should have gone subsonic at about 900. That transition usually plays hell on accuracy.

Re: 168gr AMAX

They did pretty well for me at 1000 yards....Keep in mind, I was shooting with the rifle across the hood of my Jeep, so it wasn't exactly a rock solid position like prone.....but still managed sub MOA....

Re: 168gr AMAX

No need to. Hornady loads the 178 BTHP in a standard loading just like the 168 AMAX.

They also load a 178 BTHP Superformance load but the Superformance are usually hit or miss as far as accuracy in different rifles. In my .308 they are MOA but in my team mate's .308 they are about 3/8 MOA.
