Hi
I am going to handload some hornady 168gr. amax rounds for my .308. Any body have a pet load they would be willing to share. I will be using cci large rifle primers BR-2 and the brass will be federal. I am unsure which powder to use. I usually use IMR4064 and a 168.gr SMK. But i would like to try the amax. I am considering varget or 4064 imr but leaning more twords varget, the barrel is a krieger 1-10 MTU at 22 inches from the lug. I will only be shooting 100 yds. What would you recommend,
Thank you

Re: 168gr. Hornady amax question

I think i will try 44gr IMR 4064 with 168gr.AMAX Fed brass and BR-2 Primer first, If I cant get it to produce then i will try the varget. I will look in to the 8208 also. And probly use the varget loads when i reach out farther. I have the IMR already on hand, I think i will try the IMR 8208 load as well the lower velocity sounds good.
Thanks

Re: 168gr. Hornady amax question

I just loaded A-max moly 168's, Hornady match brass, IMR4895 41grn, and 43grn. I hope to make it to the range this week to try them out.

Re: 168gr. Hornady amax question

Thanks
I was at the store this morning and got the varget. I loaded 44grs. with the 168 amax, for 20rnds. I will also try the 42.5 and in between, I will be loading about 100 rounds. ALso I have about 60 150gr smk projectiles left i would like to load them up. I know i should slow them down to compensate for the fast 1-10 twist barrel. What grain would be recommended for using varget or 4064 IMR. Any recommendations?
Thanks

1+ I've shoot steel out to 1200yds with this same load out of a 26" 1-12 twist factory varmint 700.

Re: 168gr. Hornady amax question

I posted this picture mainly due to the fact that I'm tired of all the people that have told me that the 168 A-maxs can't make it to 1k out of a 308. This steel plate was at 1201yds and I hit it with a factory 700. I had to dial 52moa to print my group on the target which is the same size as a large T-shirt. And yes I do have a NF 40moa base on my 308. The bottom bullet that clocked sideways was from me hitting low and skipping in. I fired 13 times and hit 8. I had a spotter and another shooter right next to me the whole time.

Those are the people that buy the FGMM and expect them to perform at those distances.. I watched them keyhole paper at only 800 yards.. Got to load them hot, and they will fly far..
