178 gr hornady A-max for 30/06

Gentlemen, I am looking at the 178 A-max for a new 30/06, I am going to have a custom BDC turret made once I get the rifle and find a good load to chronograph. I wanted a bullet for tactical use that would also double as a thin skined quadraped i.e deer.Any thoughts or comments or loads would be much appriciated...

Pretty sure any good load for a "thin skinned quadraped", will be sufficient for any tactical use against "thin skinned bipeds". Just find the most accurate load for that rifle with that bullet and both applications will be be met.

Good choice for a combo match/hunting bullet.

Thanks Don, I'v been handloading for 35 years, allthough I was Nine and had the enviable job of seperating wheel weights in my uncle Tinks garage. This is (in my opinion)the best section on the hide as it would take a lot of time and money to collect this info especually with the 30/06. I guess the 06 is under loaded in the manuals because of the age of the cartridge and more importantly the presure limitations of rifles that are also over a 100 years old. From what I have seen here getting the 178 to 2850 fps should'nt be to hard and better yet it wont be over preasure.Thanks again...

I shot Hornady's 178 30/06 M1 Garand load last week and i really liked it. I would be interested to see what it could do in a full out right bolt gun.

I'm going to find out when George gets the stock from Mcmillan( their 4-5 months behind). As soon as I get a chance I will load for the 178's and post the accuracy and chronograph stats...

Haven't chrono'd it but the 168amax works quite well in my 06 sporter weight 700 (was an adl i converted to bdl.)

James go to Hodgdon's reloaders site and you can find some good data http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp You can use the 175 SMK data for the 178s.

Just tested mine this weekend, sub at 100 and consistant hits on steel at 550 (3.1 mil of elevation @ 5000 ft elevation). I know the 178 performs in my 308, but wanted a similar load for my Tikka T3 in -06. Gonna work this and some 155 scenars this summer.

I shoot 180 Hornadys in my 06 with 57grs 4000MR or H4350 with very good results, Id give one of those powders a shot.
