This is my first post here so please, be gentle

I just recieved my 18" Larue obr a couple of weeks ago and wanted to share the range report with some friends.

First the rifle came packaged with the usual Larue goodies and seemed extremely well done as expected. I opted for the surefire muzzlebreak and a standard a2 stock. The scope will be a viper pst 6-24 but untill that is off of backorder I am using a nikon monarch 2.5-10 to get a feel for the rifle.

I zeroed the rifle @ 100 using some south african surplus and got 2 3 shot groups with that ammo just kidof for refrence 1.8" and 1.6" ctc.

Next 2 groups were with some one shot muitions that I picked up @ knob creek that were advertised as 168 gr match loads. First group had 2 on top of one another with a third called left opening the group up to 1.2" next group was .9ctc.

Last group @ 100 was 168 gr fgmm and it stacked 3 into a .307" ctc group. I quit shooting at 100 at that point because I knew I couldnt do any better than that

Last group of the day was with the one shot munitions stuff @ 200 where I got it to print just inside of 1.75" After that I shot a little at a 5" swinger at 300 and had no problems with the south african stuff.

Figured I shold take it home and clean it after that since it wasnt broken in yet.

All of the shooting was done off of a harris bipod in the mud with a small bag under the rear. It was sunny with no wind and the temp was around 60 degrees.

Some observations:

- Cheekweld will be a little bit of an issue with this stick due to the rail height, but wont be a deal killer by any means.

- The surefire muzzle break is awesome! No problem watching your hits thru the scope.

- Man does this thing shoot! For a rifle with 25 rounds or so through it I couldnt be more happy. I still need to settle on a load and do more testing but this thing is very capable.

- The upper and lower on this rifle are tighter than a bugs ear, you arent poping this thing apart with just your fingers.

- Mark sends these things "wet". Lets just say they are well lubed.

If anyone is interested in pics I would be glad to post them, but I still havent figured out how

Thanks
Rusty

Re: 18" Larue obr review

Sounds like a keeper to me. You might want to try some Varget, around 44grs and the 168gr AMAX that is a pretty good load for me. Also just for your information the guys on the forum are not intrested in any targets with lest than 5 shots at a time. They prefer 10 shots while standing on your head. Just kidding about standing on your head but not the round count. Have fun with your new gun.

Re: 18" Larue obr review

Good to hear from another new OBR shooter, you can read my recent post on my 18” OBR here:

Here is a photo of my stick:

The cheekweld will be a problem with the A2 stock, which is why I went with the CTR stock equipped with the RISR. Have the same muzzle break and love that too. Your upper and lower will loosen up after you take it down a few times, don’t forget to cock your hammer before you try to get it together – it will not fit with the hammer down.

Re: 18" Larue obr review

I shot a bunch of the OBRs at the range day this year, and I was impressed. It changed my opinion on the AR10 type rifles. I was seeing them shoot all day and honestly don't recall any malfunctions. That was my first time to shoot 1000 yards, and the OBRs were handling it no problem. 750 seemed easy.

Thanks for the pitchers Rusty. Nice shooting and nice looking rig! Nothing like some good gun porn to start your day (LOL).

BTW: Now that's damn funny! (last pic)

Re: 18" Larue obr review

Nice!

Could not help but notice that your gas selector is rotated to the right which is the setting for suppressed firing – is that intentional?

Actually that pic is from when I first got the rifle and was just playing with it. When I fired my very first shot out of it I had the selector set to the supressed setting (from when I was messing with it) and it didnt extract the case. My heart fell into my stomach and I couldnt believe the very first shot fired out of this thing was a fte! After about 20 seconds of heartache I realized what I had done and switched it back to the unsupressed setting and havent had an issue since.

By the way, Thats a pretty keen eye to have caught that!

Re: 18" Larue obr review

Very nice rifle. Thinking about building an AR-10 They sure make it easy just to buy one off the shelf.

Re: 18" Larue obr review

RustyT – yes, I played around with that level a bit too and can see myself leaving it in the “other” position and getting an extraction issue.

The other thing I notice is how long your muzzle brake is compared to mine. I know both of them are the Surefire 7.62mm brake that LaRue sells but I have never figured out why some are longer than the other.

Was at the NRA meeting a few weeks ago and was going to ask the folks at the Surefire booth about this but they apparently did not have any of their brakes there and the guy I talked to did not know much about their brakes – go figure.

I did get one of their suppressor–specific catalog and they only list two brakes for the 7.62 rifles – the MB762SS01 which is made for M1A, M14, or rifles with M14 spec and the MB762SSAL/RE which is for AR-10 and 308 bolt guns which is where our guns fit in. NO mention of different brake lengths! I think this is the one you have.

However, I went and got the brake number off my gun and it is the MB762-211C which is not in my catalog but on their website, still no info though about the difference except their length.

Eventually I found a post on this board that talks about these two brakes. Apparently to mount both brakes, you have to turn down a bit of the barrel behind the thread to fit them. The difference is with the MB762-211C, you have to turn down ¼ inch behind the adaptor. With the MB762SSAL/RE you have to turn down 2 ¾ inch behind the adaptor. Probably something to do with how sturdy the suppressors are supported….

Znztiv – yes, much easier but also expensive…
