1898 30-40 Krag

Spotted this earlier in the year and I told the gent if he changed his mind let me know.
Seven months later he returned with grandpas rifle.
No one in the family wanted it.
We agreed on the price - I was happy.
He was challenged to get it on target at 100 yards.
He maxed out the minimum sight adjustment but still 3’ high!
I picked up some Hornady brass, RCBS dies and shell holder!
I had some 200 grain cast bullets that came from a Saeco #301 mold. 19.4 grains of R7 -a convenient setting was used.
I shot at 100 yds with shots too high.
I raised the ladder and used the aperture at the bottom and got hits on the plates at 200 yards.
I will play with this for awhile.?
Velocity average for five shots was 1496ft/sec

Jealous as hell. Granted i haven't looked for a 30-40 krag but i definitely want one. Those actions seem to be smooth as glass and the loading gate is just well.. interesting.

I traded a GI-45 springfield 1911 (new production but used) and a beat up old enfield for one at the local gun store. Really incredible rifles; I was blown away at the accuracy just throwing some 150gr M2 FMJ's into resized 303 cases with 4350.

My Dad bought two of these from "The War Department" he paid $9.95 each for them. I still have the receipt. I still have both rifles as well. One was sporterized with a ramped hooded front sight and a redfield peep sight in back. The other is still as issued. The actions truly are smooth as glass and very cool to load.
