So I ended up with two boxes of these (200) and am not sure how to go about loading them for my 308.
I have a Remington 5R.

Any or you guys ever loaded 190's for a 308 befor?
I have a keg of IMR 4064 and am hoping you guys have a load that will work with these.

Pics would be good.
Thanks

Re: 190 grain SMK's

41.5-42.5 grains of 4064 would be the range I would try.

Re: 190 grain SMK's

IMR4064 should work awesome with the 190's

Here are a few of the 190gr targets I could find in my records. The 40gr to 40.5gr range seemed to yeild the better groups!

Re: 190 grain SMK's

I loaded 60 190grain SMKs today over IMR-4895, starting at 42.5 grains then 42.8, and 43.1. Figured I'd try the exciting OCW method to seek load nirvanna for these!
I loaded them over:
2XF Win. cases.
WLR
2.815" COAL

Also loaded up my last 12 Berger 190 VLDs over 42.5 gr of 4895.
Loaded to 2.815" COAL
WLR
2xF F.C. cases

My 1:10" Rem. 30-06, and Savage .308, like both the 190 gr. Bergers and SMKs, but I had not tried them yet in my 1:12" Mod.700 .308.

Anyone have any good stories using this powder under these pills?

Re: 190 grain SMK's

The 40.5gr load with 4064 and the 190SMK is what I settled with.

The above targets was just loaded using straight charges thrown out of my uniflow measure!

When I weigh each charge on the Denver Instrument it gives me sub 10 SD's and 1/2 moa at 100m.

It seemed once I got above 40.5 the accuracy fell off!

Re: 190 grain SMK's

Getting 2700fps with 190SMK's in front of 47.0gr of N550 in Hornady Match brass. Should work well in Winchester brass as well, since they are both light with a large case capacity. There have been good reports from those using RL17 also, and wish I had some to play with the 190SMK's.

Re: 190 grain SMK's

That load problay kicks harder than my AR-50 did!

Not sure what I have left in the 190's Don! The 175's shoot much better out of my guns with a little less recoil!

I will check the bunker and see what I have! Maybe we can work a trade when I make it up to the future Michigan of America! That is if they don't tax me when I cross the state line!

Re: 190 grain SMK's

I get real good groups with 42.5 gr. Vargant w/the 190's

Re: 190 grain SMK's

Following information derived from Rem 700 SA with 32” Lilja Palma contour, 3-groove, 1:10 twist barrel, .339 neck. Loads were shot over an Oehler 35P with screens set at 15 feet. Unless otherwise noted temp was 50 degrees with variable cloudiness, 3-5 wind. Shooting was done at 100 yards to compare known 100 yard zeros. Testing was done on the ground with Harris pod with claws. All rounds were loaded into new prep’d and trimmed Win brass .015 off the lands using -.002 neck tension. 5-shot groups were used for testing.

190SMK
43.8 grains Varget, BR2
M=2688, E=19, S=7
Same load at 80 degrees
M=2719, E=29, S=11

190SMK
44 grains RE15, 210M
M=2731, E=10, S=4
Same load at 80 degrees
M=2781, E=19, S=6

190SMK
44.7 grains RE15, 210M, Shot at 80 degrees
M=2794, E=22, S=6

Re: 190 grain SMK's

Thanks a lot guys, I ended up putting ten 190's in federal blue box brass, federal 210M primers and 40.0 grains of IMR 4064 seated at 2.800. the rifle is a remington 700 5R milspec. 1:11.25 twist with a tight chamber, any thing over 42.6 grains of IMR 4064 in the listed brass and I start to get presure sings.
I didnt get to test them as my scope when I went to sight in was about a foot and a half to the right of the target, so I had to pack up and rework it.
Ill post how they do.

Re: 190 grain SMK's

Try bumping that down to between 40gr and 40.5gr. I think you will see your group tighten up.

I would rather have MOA load with a few less fps than a 1.5moa load kicking 2800fps.

But that is just me! However, if your going out to 1000yds you need some speed. Depends on your application of the ammo. If I was to go 1000yds I would look at the load Don (USSR) posted.

Re: 190 grain SMK's

That was by far the best load that day, I was just shooting kinda on the worse side for some reason, but then again I am by no means a great shot to begin with. The loads befor were kind of hitting low, and then when I tryed this load they popped right up and tightened a bunch.

Re: 190 grain SMK's

I shot 190's today as well. The loads listed above, fired from a 20" barrelled SPS with 1:12" twist. No joy at all. 1.5" 100 yard groups at best with mysterious, unexplained flyers.

As I have another .308 with a 1:10" twist I'll save the rest for her. Of course I may have quit early, and did not go all the way through the loads I worked up to see if I was shy of an accurate load, but it did not look promising; why waste ammo?

Re: 190 grain SMK's

queequeg,

You got to use a slower powder than IMR4895 with 190's. With that powder, you will be reaching high pressure before you reach a high enough velocity to properly stabilize the bullet. And, shooting them out of a 20" barrel doesn't help.
