A buddy of mine just inherited a 1903 springfield from his grandfather in 30-06. He lives in OKC and needs it looked over and cleaned. Any recommended, trusted smiths up around there he could take this heirloom to.
Probably just need to have the headspace checked. Most of the Springfield's just need to be shot. Take to any local 'smith and he should have a set of go/no go gauges and tell you if your rifle is in spec.
So long as the s/n doesn't fall in the "Brittle" range which is 800,000 or lower for Springfield Armory and 286506 for Rock Island it's safe to shoot. I have a lot of 03's with some 03 NM's. They're easy to clean and really fun to shoot.
