Hey guys, my buddy just got a .308, 700 20" tactical and I have no idea what a good load/bullet would be for his rig,as I shoot a 26" PSS.

So my question is can anyone give me some preliminary load/powder data and a good choice for bullet for 1000yrd shooting.

Thanks in advance!

Re: 20" 700 tactical load help (308)?

For 1000 yds, go with the 175 SMK or 178 Amax's. I'm getting right at 2600fps outta my spst with 45.5g of IMR 4064 and the accuracy is good. Don't start at that load work up. Alot of guys are using RL15 with sucesses in the 20" barrels as well. For plinking at 800 and in, I use 168's over 42g of either varget, reloader 15 or 4064 with excelent accuracy. Its slow but its a friggen lazer.

Whatever you use in your gun, bullet and powder wise should be fine. Granted the rifle could be picky and not like the bullets you use but they will both shoot the same stuff. Only difference being the velocity loss of a 20" barrel versus a 26" barrel. You can use Scenar's, SMKs, VLDs, A-Maxs, TTSXs etc, the list goes on and on. Powder choice will be the same for both guns as well, however the powder CHARGE might be different due to pressure issues and whats more accurate out of the various rifles.

You will have better luck looking through the "Reloading" section of the forum for more information, a lot of good reading, especially for the .308. That's where I have gotten most my information in addition to the reloading manuals I have at home. By the way there is FGMM in both 168gr and 175gr SMK, Horandy has teh 168gr A-Max as well as their new 178gr Superformance. Black Hills, Corbon, and Lapua also sell match grade ammuntion already loaded. There are others that sell match ammuntion as well.

EDIT: The 168gr SMK has a transonic 'tumble' anywhere from the 700-900 yard line depending on the initial starting velocity. The 168gr SMK was desinged for 600 yard benchrest (correct me if I'm wrong gentleman) shooting and excels at that range, however it fails after that. The bullets becomes unstable and becomes very difficult to shoot beyond this transonic range. People do shoot the 168gr SMK out to 1000 yards but there are much better bullets than the 168gr SMK that can be used.

Just looked. Your in CO so the 168's will work fine if you move them out fast enough, I'm personaly going to work on the 200+ grain bullets for my 308 but for you buddy, just about any slick match bullet will work.

your pretty much right about the 168 SMK its more of a 600 yard bullet.... for 1000 its the 175 SMK or the 155 Lapua or even read that there are guys shooting 155 SMK and doing real good with them....... and that SPS Tac is a 100% tac driver.... i just did a break in this week end and it was almost all sub MOA with cheapo federal 150 sp 13.97 a box rounds. i have a post here with the results

its under new remington 700 sps tactical range report.
