I am about to get my build back from my smith and it's time to pick a set of rings/mount. Rifle is: .308 w/ 23" 1:10 5R Lilja in an AICS topped by a Badger 20 MOA base. The scope is probably (99.99% sure) going to be: a Steiner 5-25x56mm w/ MSR reticle (26Mils of elevation)
I'm looking heavily at a Spuhr mount. I'm torn between getting the 0Mil/0MOA and the 6Mil/20.6MOA. The 6Mil mount combined with the 20MOA base will get me starting at right around 1Mil from the bottom of the 26Mil range (26/2=13-6-6=1). Doesn't give me a lot of wiggle room for a 100 yard zero.
I plan to shoot out to 1200/1300 yards on an occasional basis, but mostly from 300 to 1000.
The reason I'm looking at the 6Mil mount is if in the future I move the scope/mount to a AR308 platform or some other gun that has a 0MOA top rail I would want to be able to have as much elevation available as possible.
Cutting to the chase, I have heard that using a 20MOA base combined with a 20MOA mount can cause the scope image to become more oval shaped. Should I be concerned? Any other issues I don't know about? What would you guys do?
