If I mainly shoot out to 300 yards and occasionaly shoot out to 1000(may do it more if it gets addcitive), which barrel length would be the best? There are two rifles I have in mind, they both have 1/10 twist but one is 20" the other is 24". The one that is 24" has a brake and a detachable magazine. The magazine part I like but is 24" too much? This will be my second rifle setup and I have limited experience.

Do you expect to move a lot with the rifle? All else equal, a longer barrel will give you extra muzzle velocity but will be heavier and less maneuverable. Does the 24" include the brake? My 308 is 22" and seems right, but it's all personal preference and what you expect to do with the rile.

No, Ill mainly just shoot at the range. Im not into hunting or anything like that. The 24" does include the brake. I will mainly shoot at 300 and maybe 1000 and if I get better at it I will shoot in competitions.

I have a 1x10 20" Rem 5R that shoot better than I can from 100-1K. I really like the 20" I sold my 24" after getting the 20"

Interesting. I cant afford the 5R Remmy, wish I could.

Re: 20" vs. 24" 308 1/10 twist

Depends on contour also. The same contour with a shorter barrel means stiffer therefore potentially more accurate due to barrel harmonics. The muzzle velocity will be minimal with the length change. I personally would go with the 20" its easily sufficient to a grand and more than so at 300.

Re: 20" vs. 24" 308 1/10 twist

I wonder how the 24" would do at 1000 yards. You said you will take this out to 1000. How often?

Re: 20" vs. 24" 308 1/10 twist

I think 20" is long for a 308. 18 is more like it. I wouldn't pay money for a 308 with a 24" barrel. You're trying too hard to make it into a 1k caliber, when there are so many better choice. If you're going 308, get a nice, light, handy rifle. You'll never go back.

Re: 20" vs. 24" 308 1/10 twist

20-21" of rifling is ideal for the caliber (that makes it a 22-23" barrel). But if it's a tight (.298) bore then 16-18" of rifling will do fine.

Get the 24". You can always cut it back if you find it too long, which you probably won't, but you can't grow the 20".

Also if it has the DBM you want it's a no brainer.
