$200 beer? WTF

From my time in the craft beer world I'll tell you that $200 ain't shit. I knew true beer nerds on the collect/trade side of shit that routinely bought and sold beers for a lot more than that. Look at prices for Dark Lord beer from 3 Floyds Brewing out of Munster, IN on eBay or Facebook. That brewery is in an industrial park in the middle of nowhere and their annual "Dark Lord Day" festival brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars and these nuts swap beers for new handgun money.

It has been several years now, but the strongest I have sampled was DogFishHead 120 minute IPA, which clocks in at 15-20%. I don't remember all of the nuances now, but I do remember that it tasted better than I expected, and I don't really care for IPAs. I would like to try the Sam Adams for comparison sake. Now I need to go grab some Great Lakes Christmas Ale...
I've never had it, but I've had similar styles and when done well they can taste good at those higher ABVs, but they no longer taste like "beer" in the sense that most Americans think of beer. The Sam Adams description of resembling Port or Sherry is pretty accurate. The style that carries big alcohol well for me is an enormous stout that's been aged in bourban barrels. I've had several in 12-15% ABV range and they are great for a cold winter evening, resembling coffee and dark chocolate. The huge barley-wine styles that can hit these huge ABVs really do more closely resemble wine in their taste and character.
Yuck! That crap is hardly new. I think I was about 12 or 13 when it came out and was 16 or 17 when I had the misfortune of tasting that garbage for the first time. When it comes to hard liquor, I hate whisky. I'm more of a rum, tequila, or vodka guy and this garbage tasted like a really cheap watered down whisky. What's next? A beer that's both a beer and an energy drink? Oh wait, that already exists!
Why does the average American hate craft beer? Most guys I know believe Busch Light to be the epitome of flavor and anything stronger hurts their feelings.
I gotta say man, watching you love on your Natty Light almost made me nostalgic for cheap beer, ALMOST. Even when I was living on The Beast I never crossed the Natty line. We've all got our chosen poison, which keeps the store from running out of our favorite libations.
