Need some ideas.

If I could do stick and glass for $3k I would be a happy camper.

Would prefer something larger, flatter and with more stout, than 308.

If I were you I would contact Precision Tactical at [email protected] or 850-902-6162. they are doing a custom build from Scott Mcree off his chassis and a "switch barrel". basically a savage type barrel nut on a rem 700 action. I have heard he guarantees something like .5 moa @ 100 but not positive about that. At any rate I think it will fit nicely in your budget.

Thanks for the ideas Men, much appreciated. I am about to give PT a call right now.

Also, I do like Savages. That 110 BA in 338 Lapua or 300 wm sure does look like something worth checking into.

If you are "budgeting" a rifle, then I'd be a little concerned with feeding the 338lm. Even reloading it isn't cheap. The Lapua brass is super expensive, and all that powder and 300gn bullets burn those dollars up quick. 50 rounds and your shoulder is hurting! I'd look into some of those other 1000yd rounds like the creedmores or 7wsm. Just wondering why you need something more stout than a 308? It will take any American animal, and is good to go arguably to 800+ yards. Do you want to feel it in your shoulder more? Are you wanting to bang steel at 1600yd? If the answer is yes, then the 338lm is probably your holy grail. If you want decent glass to get you that far for $1000, you will need to go with a fixed lense.

Yeah, I have a lot of variables to consider, no doubt about it Mike. I like the 110 BA platform but the chamberings are limited. Therein is going to be the caveat. Finding a great platform in the right chambering at the right price.

Odd that no one asked how far the op plans to shoot or what he intends to shoot with the rifle. Everyone just blindly gave random advice without knowing those two very vital pieces of information.

So, to the op, what is the maximum distance you plan to shoot?

Also, what kind of targets will you be shooting at? (Elephants, moose, elk, squirrels, coyote, paper, steel, etc)

For $3K, this is what I'd do.

1. Buy this rifle: REMINGTON 700 STAINLESS SPECIAL 5-R MILSPEC BARREL .300 WIN for sale (922062284) It costs $1,100 shipped.

2. Buy this scope: Bushnell 3.5-21x50 Elite Tactical 34mm Rifle Scope it's listed at $1,449.00 but if you call Liberty Optics ( 406-827-6543 ) and tell him you're from the Sniper's Hide, I think Scott will cut you even a better deal.

3. Buy this rail: Nightforce 1-Piece 20 MOA Picatinny-Style Scope Base Remington 700 $116.00

4. Buy these rings: Vortex Precision Matched Picatinny-Style Rings Matte $119.99 - $139.99

5. Have all this shipped straight to a gunsmith. I would choose High Speed Shooting Systems out of Yakima, Wa. Have JD blueprint, bed and "accurize" your rifle. JD is both fast and amazingly affordable.

6. Once you get your rifle from JD, hit the range and shoot!

That's it! That's exactly what I was looking for.

All the way and then some. Muchos gratzeeass from a member of class 5-81 who also ended-up in The Deuce with the 2/325 under Mad Jack Hamilton and Steve Smoke'm Slocum among others you would probably know.

I appreciate it Brother.

Just what I would do... I think the one qualifier is what "stout" vs .308 means to you..

Savage LRP 6.5C / .260 or 6.5x284 = $1,100
Leupold MK4 8.5x25 TMR M5 or Bushnell XRS / HDMR w Horus = $1,800

Depending on your answer to distance and power needed, some of the above are great choices. I'd also want to know whether you reload. I'd also want to know if semi-auto was a consideration.
DPMS in 260 with a used Nightforce NXS in your choice of power should be do-able for under $3000.
