204 Barrel for AR

Re: 204 Barrel for AR

If you have your heart set on a 204 ruger White Oak Armory makes them. They make very high quality products. I was thinking about getting one myself. I looked into the round a little further and discovered that a 1-9 twist would be needed to shoot the heavier 50gr bullet for extended ranges. I suppose "extended ranges" is all a matter of opinion as the .223 will out distance the .204 . Eleaf's post above is the second I have seen recently that mentioned the 20 tactical, another option. At any rate, please keep us posted. Good luck.

20 Tac will get out and touch a coyote at 500 yards. And by touch, I mean bring down.

Throw in the 39 grain blitz kings, and you should be able to send those bad boys down range somewhere approaching 4000 fps. 32 grainers will go at or above 4000 fps.

You will need a faster twist barrel to use the 50 or 55 grainers.

This is the guy who designed the 20 Tactical

Bringing Cooper 20 Tac out this week to call some song dogs.

You can get a barrel chambered in 20 Tac at http://www.ar15barrels.com/prod/20tac.shtml

Or you can get a pimped out upper at http://www.6mmar.com/20_Tactical.html

The only downside to the cartridge is that you MUST reload for it. You can get ammo from 2 places that I know of, and it's REALLY expensive and custom ordered. Otherwise, it's a GREAT cartridge.

There are others who make barrels for it (Shilen is one, I'm pretty sure).

Yes. If you don't reload. 20 Tac is NOT for you.

That said, it is easy to reload for and they make proper components and dies for it (as opposed to having to form brass from some other round etc).

Either way, you're not losing much with the .204 in performance (the difference is minimal), and you're gaining the ability to walk in to any gun shop in America and buy ammo.

You will SLAM some p dogs with the 20 Tac out to 650 or maybe further (of course wind is the defining factor for these small bullets at that kind of range)

I'll have my 17 Remington and my 20 Tactical in SD this summer for a PDog hunt. I might even bring out my 6.5 Grendel to REALLY reach out and touch them.

Re: 204 Barrel for AR

Sabre Defense makes a great barrel if you choose to make your own upper--the steel is a longer lasting alloy than conventional barrels---204 is a great p-dog gun and coyotes within reason==
wish I had 2 204 uppers for when you heat up the barrel--always have to switch to 223 upper right now--maybe Midway will have a
sale on 'em this year!!

Re: 204 Barrel for AR

204- WOA. A buddy did one and I did the load development for it. An honest 1/4 MOA rifle at 100 with a stock trigger

. Took it to 400 yards on steel, it made one paint splash and only grew slightly over the next 4 shots.

Re: 204 Barrel for AR

Do it. I have one upper with a 24SS barrel in 204 Ruger, and it's fun to use. Just be sure to put a decent trigger in that thing.

+1 for Sabre Defense barrels.

I put one on one of my latest builds. Love it.

Re: 204 Barrel for AR

I have a WOA 26" barrel and came with a bolt for my AR-15. I shoot at my local club range every month out from 100 to 600 hundred yards with it between out F-Class and Long Range Tactical Matches. Past 600 yards the group on paper goes to pieces. At 600 yards I probably have a 6" inch spread on target but 500 hundred and up close I'm usually shooting 1/2 minute groups. Wind does play with my Hornady 40 gr. V-Max some but thats what makes it fun. I do reload my ammo for mine so factory ammo may not do as well. I got the tighter twist and as long a barrel just to shoot the heavier 40 grain at that time before the 50s showed up. Never shot a coyote with it yet but I think it will do OK.

Yes
