I want a Rem 700 SPS Varmint chambered in 204ruger. It comes standard with a 26" barrel with a 1 in 12 twist. Do you guys think it would be dumb to cut the barrel down to 22 or 20 inches? I just want a shorter, lighter, easier to handle rifle. How much velocity do you think I will loose. I plan on shooting 40 grain bullets handloaded.

I have two 204s - one with a 26 inch barrel and the other with a 22. The 22 is my night hunting/calling rig. It is much nicer for treks to those 'back in there' sets and long nights of calling. Those shots tend to be a bit shorter anyway so the velocity loss is not quite as big a deal. I will look and see what some of my velocity numbers were out of the 22. Most of my loads are 39gr BK.
