i have been thinking about getting a .204 cal for huntint anything up to the size of a large hog. i would be planning to take only headshots on the larger animals. what would be the max headshot range of a .204. im not looking to explode any heads just make a reasonably quick kill. i also wonder what would be the smallest size animal i could take without it exploding the critter. i would use it for most things over 200 yards which is the max range i would push the .17hmr to take a squirrel/rabbit ect. and from 100 to take racoon/geese and so on.

Re: .204 ruger hog hunt

i have a buddy in idaho and he shoots coyotes with the 204 200+ yards no exits one nice little .20 hole in hide would no think twice about taking a base of the ear shot on a hog if he was broad side but straight on head would not do any thing but split the skin and wound the pig. so if you feel you can put the bullet in the soft part at the base of the ear fire awat if not use something a little bigger
just my .02 bryan

boy a .204 is really pushin it for a hog, if they make a fmj for the .204 i would use that and focus on a head shot, a boars melon can be pretty tough, ive seen broadheads skim off there head. i have killed quite a few with my .22mag with cci hp's, im getting pass throughs on hogs up to 120lbs with this setup so i think you will good aslong as your hell of a shot. personally i would go alittle bigger beacause trailin a pissed of hog is no fun. sounds like a .22mag would be fit your needs pretty good
