Hi, I'm going to start loading 208 AMAX in my rem. 700 308 and need some input. Anyone work with this bullet/case combo? What powder(s)/primers do you use? Anything else? Thanks for your help everyone.

It's a great bullet, but not for .308. Most are shooting lower weights than that. 178, 175, 168, 155

You won't be able to get them to go fast enough to really take advantage of the BC.

Save those for a 300 win mag or WSM. They're rarer than hens teeth now anyway.

Fargo's right, that 208 is too big and heavy for your 308. I'll trade ya for 178's that I have. They work much better in the 308...

If you were shooting F-class F T/R at 800, 900, 1K, then the 208 would be awesome. It offers the least wind resistance, and elevation doesn't matter much in that game. But in all practicallity and for closer in shooting, the lighter bullets are much flatter. The 208 drops a ton from a 308 Win. You don't get the advantage of the 208 until 800+, and most prefer a faster caliber by then.

What about subsonic then? If supersonic's not good for the 308 then shooting sub with a can should be good right? Thanks again for your input.

My understanding is that with a rifle chambered in .308win, projectiles above 180gr tend to be better suited to faster twist rates and higher velocities meaning your .30-06, .300winmag and such.

Yes, barrel twist would be the limiting factor. I'm showing to stabilize a 208 at 1050 fps, you will need a 1:7" twsit barrel. The 208 is a very long bullet, and would not be a practical subsonic bullet.

If you plan to push your 308 past 1000 yards, the 208 is tough to beat.

I shoot two loads in my 308. The 155 Scenar at 2900 fps, and the 208 AMax at 2620 fps.

At 1K yds, the 155 needs 28.5 moa, the 208 needs 30.25 moa, elevation correction.

At 1K yds, 10 mph full value windage is 7.25 moa for the 155, and 5.75 moa for the 208.

At 1200 yards both need 40 moa elevation correction.

The 155 retains 1200 fps to about 1275 yds, the 208 retains 1200 fps to about 1500 yds. 1200 yd windage is 9.25/7.25 favoring the 208.

I like RL17 under the 208, and use CCI 200 primers.

The only drawback to the 208 is you will generally have an oal too long for a Rem magazine. It will be a single load, unless you arrange a magazine around 3.00" long.
