was about to start load development on my 16" .308 this weekend but been reading about the 208gr A-max R17 combo and it really is shifting my focus. I was planning on a 155gr A-max as my "long range" load untill I ran the numbers on the 208. it looks like if I can push it at least 2400 it will out perform the 155 from the muzzle all the way to the big end. I haven't found any info of this combo used on a gas gun under 20"
I know the easy answer is go out buy a box, a lb of powder and give it a try. but i'd like to avoid investing over $50 for something that may not work at all. anybody tried that combo in a short barreled .308 perferably a gas gun?

Re: 208gr a-max question.

If you could push that 155 over 2900 you might get what you desire down range, but that probably won't happen out of a 16" barrel--I can't get 2900 out of a 20".

As for the 208, I have run many down the tube of my 700. They run at an average of 2394, but the OAL is 3.00" which would never work in your rifle--I single feed them in my 700. Accuracy is ok but not stellar. I can run sub 1/2 MOA with 175s and 168s. the 208 AMAX is 1 MOA+.

out of a 16"? what powder? I see people running the 208 amax 2700+ with a heavy charge of reloader 17 out of 20+" guns.

as for the 155's i'd be suprised if I could get 2650 out of a 16"

I am running 45.5 gr of Reloder 17 out of a 20" and like I said, that is only running at 2394--or so.

I agree on the 155s, I run about 2750 with 155s out of a 20"
