Looking at shooting 50-60 grains in .22-250, my research tells me 1-10 is the way to go but the more I search the more confused I get. Any thoughts on this.

Re: .22-250 1-10 twist

Get a 9 or an 8, that way you can shoot the heavies (69-75) which will do fantastic at farther ranges. If your gonna go through the work of rebarreling, do it right! Ps. My dream is a 22-250 8 twist varmint rifle.

Re: .22-250 1-10 twist

If you are only planning on shooting 50-60gr bullets, nothing wrong with the standard 14 twist. I would think that a 10 twist may vaporize lightweight bullets at 22-250 speeds. I have thought about building a 8 twist 22-250AI to run 75AMAX bullets...but I havent gotten to that project yet.

Re: .22-250 1-10 twist

A 12 twist will stabilize the 55 grain boattails and 60 flat base bullets. 8 twist is the safe bet for the 75 grain amax and the 80 grain Berger VLD. A 10 twist may stabilize the 69 grain Sierra, I can't say for sure.

Yeah, that was a typo...I meant 8 twist.

Re: .22-250 1-10 twist

I shoot a .22-250AI with an 8 twist built to shoot the 75 A-max. This was originally a straight .22-250 with a factory 14 twist. The factory barrel shot the 55s extremely well, but never tried the 60s. If I were you I'd go with a faster twist than 14, to give yourself options. A 10 twist seems to be a fit, but l suggest going with the 8.

Re: .22-250 1-10 twist

I shot 55 Vmaxes through my factory 700 VSSF 1-14 barrel last year with incredible accuracy out to 500yds. I was going through setting the barrel back the other day to find out that about .5" of the throat has no lands according to the test indicator, so it received a new 1-9" barrel.

I plan on shooting 53gn Vmax mainly out of it, hopefully they stay together, then I can shoot some heavier bullets if I feel like it.

Re: .22-250 1-10 twist

53gr v-max in 1-12 twist. Better BC than the 60gr pills, with more velocity. 1-12 is easier to find in stock somewhere as well (versus having to wait...I the patience of a 6 year old though) And 1-12 will still shoot the 60 grainers if you have your heart set on them.

But, yes, 1-10 will work just fine with that grain range if you already have a barrel/ammo in mind. So put your worries aside.

Re: .22-250 1-10 twist

I think you will do fine with the 1 in 10 shooting 50-60gn. bullets. I wouldn't hurt to twist it faster in case you want to shoot something heavier later on though.

Re: .22-250 1-10 twist

Don't mean to jack the thread, but anyone try a faster twist with 90's? Sounds fun, but haven't spoke to many that have tried it.
