OK, so I am tired of long barrels. I have been getting good velocity from a 26" tube and both 6.5 CM and 6.5x47.

I am going to play with a 22" tube and either 6.5 CM or 260.

Anyone running this setup? My concern is if I drop to around 2500 fps, I lose pretty much any ballistic advantage to a fast 155gr or 185gr 308.

How did the SH build with the short tube in 260 turn out, what are you guys getting and are you pushing them hard?

I need to be able to run factory ammo (not always, but I just don't always have time to load).

Re: 22" barrel...6.5mm...thoughts?

Just had a 22.5" 260 done, 22" 260s run around 2700/140s if good powders used, if not 2600+, hope that helps.

Re: 22" barrel...6.5mm...thoughts?

I've got a 20" 260 and pushed 130 JLK's @ 2745. The 139 Scenars ran 2685, though I could probably get them up above 2700 if I wanted to.

ETA: Using H4350

Re: 22" barrel...6.5mm...thoughts?

I'm going 24" on my 6.5CM and what I've read is there isn't much of a loss between 24" and 26" on the Creedmoor. I too wanted to get into a 20-22" but am afraid I will be giving up too much velocity for a competition rifle. I'm not sure what your needs/uses are though.

As for the SH rifles I don't think anyone has received their rifles yet.

Edit: Those are some pretty good numbers out of 20" & 22" tubes. My new barrel hasn't been cut yet so if enough people report good enough numbers out of their shorter tubes I may go shorter after all. My only concern is I was hoping to run the Hornady factory match ammo so until I start loading I won't be able to heat up the charge to get those higher speeds. That's also why I decided on 24" over a shorter barrel.

Re: 22" barrel...6.5mm...thoughts?

If I had it to do over again I would have gone 22" rather than 20". I originally cut to 20 because I planned on running my suppressor on it, but that ended up being pointless on a 260 because a 30 cal can still has enough random pops from the larger bore that you want to wear earpro anyway and it has almost no recoil for the suppressor to mitigate.

2750 is plenty of velocity for me for a practical shooting comp, I care more about wind drift than drop and having less recoil and a better handling weapon for positions is nice.

Re: 22" barrel...6.5mm...thoughts?

22" is my minimum for a mid sized 6.5mm, YET a good one IMHO if you enjoy as I do handling qualities.

FWIW, I had 3 '96 mausers, 2 chopped/sporterized in 6.5x55, a round that uses 1.5gr more powder. One 24", one 21", spread, 100fps, almost exact.

SO, you are looking at around 30fps loss per inch in typical bbls.

This is also good info for me because I was planning to run a 30cal can on my 6.5mm too. Hmm... decisions decisions.

Re: 22" barrel...6.5mm...thoughts?

The 2750 out of black hills makes me feel real good about this.

I have found that my can (sandstorm) works great with a 6.5 running through it at 2800. I actually prefer it to the 308. I can't say it is quieter, but more pleasing and still hearing safe, huh.

Looks like Moon is getting a barrel to chop soon.:D

This rifle shot incrediblely well and it's barrel was only 20 inches long.

I use a 762sd on my 6.5x47. I feel it is quieter than my 308, but my groups open up with it. I have a 22" and get 2850 with 130vld and 36.8 rx15

Re: 22" barrel...6.5mm...thoughts?

I've got a SAS stainless and it is REALLY effective on 308s. So much so that experienced shooters have commented on it and I've never so much as had a hint of ringing or discomfort when shooting without ear pro.

With my 260 I noticed that from time to time I'd get a slight ringing, especially when shooting from a covered position (same covered shooting bench I frequently shoot the 308 from without incident) so it didn't take this happening too many times for me to put the headphones back on.

I don't know if it's due to the 20" barrel spitting unburnt powder into the can or if it's the largish bore that SAS uses in their designs or what but for me the 260 has so little recoil and the noise cancellation benefits just weren't satisfactory enough to justify all that extra weight and length hanging off the end of the barrel. But YMMV.
