My reloading room
debating on having my sig cross barrel swapped out. Ballistics on the 16” .308 is shit. So why not make it a dual purpose.

Purpose
1. being varmint/ coyote
2. PRS rig

I’m on the fence about the 22 gt or 6gt. Not to much on guys hunting with the 22gt.

Is the bc of the 22gt really going o
To benefit more over the 6gt?

I do already have a 6mm arc so I have 6mm varmint bullets on hand. Plenty of varget for either caliber.

Pros and cons please🙏

I’m running 70gr nosler BT in my arc. But only able to push it to 2800 fps
You may be able to run the 70s depending on twist rate. My gunsmith recommended an 8 twist and going no lower than 75 grain bullets when he built my dual role 6x47L years ago.

He had a guy call and complain about a rifle that he built. I guess the guy was running some fast velocities with lighter bullets, and the bullets were blowing up mid flight.

The gt has considerably more case volume than the arc. You can push a 115 to 3k and stay under pressure. The sweet spot for most of the good 6mm bullets is 2800-2850 imo. This will preserve barrel life to 3k+. Pushing around 3k fps will get you around 2k barrel life. The 6gt is a breeze to load for and will give you better barrel life than gt. You also are less likely to run into issues blowing up bullets , unless you decide to run hornady in a 7 twist out of the 6mm.

I would skip the 22gt and go for the 6gt. Any of the br sized 6mm cases are about the perfect cartridge for white tail deer and yotes.

There's more "risk" of heavy 22 cal bullets blowing up in fast twist barrels like if using 6.5-7 twist. Much less risk in 6mm at 7.5-8 twist. If you go for 22 I suggest a .219 bore.

Granted I've been very unlucky..
As I've been down that road twice now in 20 caliber fast twist with 55 grainers and 22 cal with 88 grainers. Had to substitute 40's in the 20 cal slowed down a bit and 75's in the 22 cal but these worked at 3000 fps otherwise my results were frustrating right away for the 88's and 300 rounds into the 55's.
All was not lost but my intention was not to use lighter bullets to begin with.

Also you'll get marginally better throat life in the 6mm as well as being able to see strikes in the dirt better. Of course slightly more recoil and less velocity in the 6mm.

I’ve shot a few critters with my .22GTs pushing 88gr ELDs and they are very impressive. The cartridge is just plain fun to shoot. Light recoil makes spotting your impacts a breeze, it’s flatter than my 6.5 Creedmoors but does just as well in the wind. The only thing that would make me wish I had gone with the 6GT over the .22 would be if I lived in a place that had minimum cartridge requirements for big game. And, if that were the case, I would probably go with the 6 Creedmoor just because factory ammo is available should I need it. Heck, now that the .22 Creedmoor has gone SAAMI, if rebarreling, I might go that route.

My son had a 6.5 CM cross that was only a mediocre shooter so he replaced the barrel with an IBI carbon fiber prefit. His cross is now a hammer. IBI chambers .22 Creedmoor in their Sig Cross prefits, so that is the way I would go.

Well for prs a 6mm would be easier for spotting misses/impacts, it would be better in wind as well.
Do you shoot a 6 and or 22gt? I do.......90 atips have a g7 of 305 to 1200y in my 7tw 22gt, at 3110fps. Recoil is incredibly light. It's a fantastic cartridge and will outrun the 6 in every way ballistically.

I have had 4x 6gt and 2x 22gt barrels. The 6gt is happy with with 105/115 bullets at 2850-2950, the 22 like 85-90gr bullets 3050-3150fps in my experience. The lighter 22 stuff like 75s and 80s go 3200+ from my 22" easily.

I think the only thing the 6gt has on the 22 gt is the barrel life. Which is what steered me away from 22 creedmoor.

105-112gr bullets with same bc at 2900-2950, VS 85-90gr bullets going 150-200fps faster with same or less recoil. 22cm is a beast. My 18" 22cm still can outrun my 22" 22gt. These fast hard hitting 22s are legit.

doesn’t seem like a very good trade off to me.
Shorter barrel life for 100-200fps.

Everything I’ve looked at says 22 cm 800-1200 round and it’s time for a new barrel.
6gt and 22gt 1800-2000 + before a new barrel is needed

I don't know on the 22gt barrel life, it's essentially a 22-250 case capacity wise. My match barrel has 1100 rounds and it looks worse than my 6gt barrels with 2200 rounds that I've retired. It still shoots good, but the 22gt builds carbon rings quickly, mine have and have the barrels my friends have spun. I'd definitely recommend cleaning every 120 rounds.
