Just got my Dad's 220swift to the range for the first time, after a trip to the gunsmith. wanted to reset the zero and check to see if it shot straight. Dad brought along a box of Hornady 40 gr VX ammo, after firing a decent 5 shot group(with little effort) I was happy to find that this rifles loves this ammo.

I double checked it again, and shot it at 200 yds, and then got this one, with the same point of aim.

So now I am really curious as to what Hornady put into this load, as I would like to reproduce it.
Does anyone know, or is there a way to find out what load Hornady uses?

If you handload for it you can get rid of part of the vertical in the groups.

That's a real tight shooting cartridge. I have seen them shoot ragged one hole 5 shot groups (slightly smaller than your top group) from experienced shooters / handloaders, (benchrest shooters). The cartridge design isn't quiet as good as the PPC cartridges. But for the date it was designed, it's a very good cartridge. But a lot of things have changed since the mid 1930s.

He isn't interested in loads other than duplicating the factory loads he was shooting. That's why I removed the data in my post.

    Okay, misunderstood.

In that case, pull the bullet and weigh the powder in the Hornaday load.

Look at the powder and guess what is being used. I have several different powders available that I bought over the years when I try to do this.

I was able to dupilcate a blackhills load that shot well in a 223 this way.

They wont tell you and even if they did chances are it will be a bulk powder thats not sold to the public. My swift loves H450 unfortunatly it was discontined and i just opened my last 8 pound keg the other day

. Try H380 its my second favorite powder in my swifts.
