Has anyone had any luck with this or really attempted it? I tried it once and got poor results at the very best. I had a pallet as a back stop and a piece of cardboard on it painted bright orange. The gun is a r 700 trued with a shilen 27" 1:7 ss tube that was also trued to the action... The ammo was Norma casing, 77 smk and not sure about the powder load as I did not build them. The loads chronographed at 3005 with a SD of 6 fps. The group measured at 34".... So where is everything going to hell. There were NO keyholes
* edit*
the wind was dormant and mirage was a little to none.

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

The 77 SMK BC is .356.

With your 1/7 bbl, a Berger 80gr VLD would probabaly do a lot better with a BC of .480

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

As MtM. stated the bullet choice is the question. You're arriving subsonic and even though they may not be keyholing, it doesn't mean that they aren't walking all over the place as they fall through the sound barrier.

1/7 will stabilize the 90 VLD's (G1 BC ~ .53). I'd try that or a 80gr Amax which has a .45 ish BC and you should be able to push it almost as fast as the 77 SMK

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

77 SMK do not work well at a 1000 yds. as both said above. You might find this interesting.

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

I was at a sniper school in Arizona last month. We were shooting to 1360 yards. One guy had a .223 AR platform and was getting hits at 1360 yds. Not sure what bullet he was shooting. The target was a rock painted white. It was about the size of a 3 day assault pack.

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

We just got done shooting a 1K this past weekend, my Savage 10FP .223 pushing a 75grn A-Max with 25.6grns of Varget was putting 14" groups on target easy. And that was with 28-30 MPH wind with gusts of up to 40mph, plenty of Hide members witnessed it. But nothing compared to the 5.1" group my 6MMBR was doing at 1K!

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

just got done shooting, a 80 gr A-max in 2 mph quarter value wind not sure what powder load was but it ran through chrono at avg of 3017 held 9.5" at 1100 on same range!!! Night and day!!! were gonna play with it a little more. The 90 VLD wasn't impressive at 29" but they only chrono'd at 2721 on average

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

Just built a 223AI, 700SA, kreiger 1/8 [email protected]" hoping to get a load with 80vlds or 80 amax to make a 1000yd. Anyone want to guess what kind of speed I'll get with a 30.5" barrel?

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

3100

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

I have a 223AI with a 27 inch barrel sending 80 grain SMK 3100. Very accurate using N-150. WORK UP LOADS CAREFULLY........

with that long of a barrel, your gonna play hell getting a high velocity without overpressuring more than likely..., however when you find the right SLOW combo you should find upper 3100 easy territory maybe as high as 3250

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

The 77's are not good at 1000. The 80 VLD's work best, even better than the 90's (which really need a 6.5 twist for best results). A barrel over 22" will not help much unless you have the AI case because the .223 lacks the powder capacity to effectively use such a long barrel.

80 JLK VLD's (.510 BC) with 24.5 of RE15 should get at least 2820fps from a 22" bbl. H4895 might yield slightly higher velocities, in the 2850 range, which should do nicely at 1100.

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

shot the 80 VLD at 1100 today and ended up with 15" and 17" groups but also had full value at 3 winds at 9 mph gusts to 15 so its apples to oranges. I respect the load though. they chrono'd at 2890 which made the dope off but still will work.
plus I think the 9.5" group was a lot of luck!!!!

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

I run the 75 A-max out of my .223 1-8 twist finished at 22" and she runs to 1000 with ease. 2890FPS with a B.C. of .435. I have to say how much I enjoy shooting and practicing with it.

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

I've shot 75gr HDY HPBT Match (Moly) using compressed (26.5gr) loads of Ramshot Big Game. I never clocked them or tried them way out, but they were DANG accurate at 200yd. I got the impression (it generated a fair amount of muzzle flash) that they would get better velocities in a longer barrel than the 24" 1:9" 10FP we were using. Pressures did not appear prohibitive at 2.400" OAL. I'd advise caution, but I think this load could have potential in longer barrels. Me, I'd keep it in a bolt gun.

Re: .223 Accuracy at 1100 yards

I'm thinking about rebarreling and trueing my other 223 to a 223 AI for a bigger cartridge and try the 90VLD or this new milled solid bronze round my smith had built. It's 82.6 grns and kinda weird. When the patent goes through I'll post specs other than BC, which is .503
