I am going to load for a Prairie Dog extermination trip in 3 weeks & want re-use my once fired brass, mostly Hornady, some BHA. I'm going to use 50g Vmax bullets, CCI BR4 primers ( or Fed 205M). In the past Hornady factory ammo w 50g Vmaxes has shot amazing groups from my 24" Bushmaster Varminter. Does anyone have any load info? I also have 60g Sierra HP varminters to use. I just got a jug of H335 & really want to make this work & not buy something else ( I do have Benchmark, VV 135 & Varget as well)...info appreciated.

bohem, thanks, guess I could have looked for myself....I have Sierra's load manual & need to get others. My first try was over the load max, and not accurate...whoops

Re: .223 load recommendations for H335 in Bushmast

Well I recently started reloading. I was chasing the accuracy of the Black Hills 50gr. Vamx ammo.

I ended up copying the BH...I use BH brass, CCI primers (I know BH used something else for their primers) Hornady 50gr Vamx bullets and 24.8gns of TAC....this is pretty much the BH load to a "T".
Here how it shoots from my Tikka:

Take care,Stan

Stan, thanks for the info. I have also shot alot of BHA- it's great. I will pick up some Tac if the H335 won't do it. Your photo didn't post, at least not so I could tell...

Re: .223 load recommendations for H335 in Bushmast

H335 is a good powder for what you are looking to do. 25g or about should be ideal for the 50g Vmax. FIL is shooting 25.5g with 52g HPBT bullets into little bitty holes.

Re: .223 load recommendations for H335 in Bushmast

25 gr 335 with 52gr euber or shilen benchrest bullets my stag varminter is consistently under 1/2 moa.the flat base hp benchrest bullets are the most reliable ive put through my ar.

Re: .223 load recommendations for H335 in Bushmast

I run a 55gr nosler b-tip w/ 24gr of H335 loaded to mag length with good results. Somewhere between 24-25gr should work well w/ a 50gr v-max.

Re: .223 load recommendations for H335 in Bushmaster

Same as the others that said ( "use right around, 25.0 H335" ) . in my 24" barrel bushmaster Varm. with the 50 grn. V-max & 25.0 grn. of H335 & it's right @ around ( 3250 fps vel. ) . Shoots pretty tight for Varmint load. It also shoots the 52 grn sierra hpbt match bullets good with the same load.

If H335 doesn't work for you, give Varget a try. Works very well in my Browning A-Bolt and in this case better than Benchmark.

Re: .223 load recommendations for H335 in Bushmast

I agree that 24-25 gr of H335 is terrific for 50 or 55 gr vmax. I use this almost exclusively for my contender 14" barrel, and it smokes em. If you see a jack rabbit, pop one of them too, head shots are amazing with Vmax.
24 gr h335, 50 gr vmax, I forget the coal, but it is out to the lands in the contender.
I havent cooked up a charge for the Varget, since I only have about 6 lbs, when the shortages started.

BLC-2 works really well in my AR also. I shoot the WC844/H335 more though because I tend to use the BLC-2 for my 30-06 and it's middleweight bullets.

Re: .223 load recommendations for H335 in Bushmast

That max Hodgdon load for 55 gr 223 is 25.3gr
Threshold of short brass life is between 29 and 30 gr.
At 31 gr the extractor grove expands .003"

Re: .223 load recommendations for H335 in Bushmast

Ok, I really missed a lot of info from shooters who had great advice, after my post. Although it's months later, some took the time to respond-thank you. Going to try several loads suggested. I have a new upper --Krieger 1/7 24" & will work on the 50g V-max (& heavier), getting into .25".

Re: .223 load recommendations for H335 in Bushmast

60gr Sierra Varminters shoot really well out of my RRA 8" twist. 24gr H335 is my powder charge, CCI 400s, LC brass, 2.260" OAL, no crimp. Shoots under 1 moa for 10 shot groups, .5-.75 moa for 5 shots.

Good luck, and load safe!
